Red Hat 7.3.

Awreet. All 10 of the computers here at the house run RedHat.

How long ago did the maintainer quit? KDE has been around for four years and there is still no version of KDE in the stable distro. KDE 3 came out months ago, KDE 3.01 and 3.02 are already out, and 3.1 has been released in alpha. Nor is KDE some minor Linux app; it's the most widely used Linux desktop!

I guess that places me in the Linux minority. The new KDE is indeed pretty, but I always stick with Gnome.

Modern distros, like Mandrake, offer the user the choice of using current versions of either.

This is true. However, I use Gnome when I start X. Well, IF I start X. Most of time I'm on the command line except when on the 'Net.

Atta Boy! We don't need no stinkin' gooey!

Thanks for the ping - keep me on the Penguin Ping List.

I had always heard about debian, but never really understood it. This was a good read! I run RH7.2 & 7.3. I've got Mandrake and Caldera distros, but don't use them.

There is a config file in IIRC /etc/apt/conf/ that controls your apt-get sources. You just add something like this "deb ftp.us.debian.org/pub/debian/ main contrib." It's been a while since I'ved used debian, but the syntax is pretty straight forward. It's easier than mandrake in that regard. If you want to install a new package you just type "apt-get install xmms kde3-base libxml2." To upgrade everything you just do "apt-get upgrade."

Switch to MacOS X.1 it is essentially NextSTEP 5.0. Most people don't realize that OSX is on the underside absolutely nothing like the original MacOS, it is built on the modernized components that the original NextSTEP was built on. FreeBSD 3.3, Mach 3.0, OpenSTEP 4.0 APIs, Objective C, it's a truly beautiful OS. For a desktop, no linux distro can go toe-to-toe with it. It is what UNIX on the desktop should be.

Believe it or not, it's being ported to the PC right now. And to that I say, "'Bout friggin' time!"
