..."what took the place of the Smith?"
There's just an empty spot in our hearts, but closest in hardware is the Taurus, a respectable choice.
BTW, any updates on the S&W story? I know they canned the CEO who led them down that dark path.

They were bought by SAF-T-HAMMER, an American Company, for pennies on the dollar.

However, it would be an interesting question: how much of production was shipped westward? I'm sure that some of it was sold to the residents of the Northeast. Most assuredly many firearms were sold in the Northeast. Although New York City was early in enacting the Sullivan law until the 1960's it was still common to have many in the New England states well armed. As a sidelight there are some "autrhentic" Colts, Smith and Wessons. and Winchesters out there that are without real serial numbers because they were put together by employees of these companies from parts that were left about. These tend to be older guns and home mades that meet or even exceed specs due to the master machinisats who made them.
