Lol..see, depending on which news source. I've read/heard, that the letter was postmarked July 3, but received yesterday.

Interesting. Where did you see or hear about this? All kinds of information, and everything is different. Frustrating, to say the least.

Actually, I just heard Ed say on LK that the letter was postmarked on the 3rd, but it may have been laying around with the other mail for several days...they just noticed it yesterday.

It was on KSL. Here's the report from their web site:

July 10, 2002--

The father of Elizabeth Smart said, today ... he received a letter from someone, claiming to have knowlege about the girl's kidnapping.

Police, say they haven't studied the letter. And, the Smart family admits they aren't sure, the letter is anything more than a -hoax.

Nevertheless, the letter is making national headlines ... in a case that has had few developments.

The letter was to the Smart family care of Shriner's Hospital July third -- Postmarked from Dallas Texas.

Ed Smart/Elizabeth's Father: "IT'S THE FIRST LETTER I'VE HAD COME TO ME WHICH SUPPOSEDLY THE ABDUCTOR WAS ADDRESSING ME AND WANTING TO DO SOME KIND OF NEGOTIATION."

A source who read the letter says it was typed and printed on a computer.

And that it was unspecific, it rambled, and made little sense.

A hospital administrator says he faxed the letter to police two days ago---

But police say they haven't received it, and therefore haven't analyzed it yet.

While they were told by Chief Rick Dinse not to comment on camera, detectives did say they're surprised Ed contacted the media, BEFORE police. And they say it's odd that the letter's author apparently asked to negotiate, but left no instructions.

Ed Smart did not give a specific reason why he chose to reveal news about the letter at the family's regular news briefing today. Though it's apparent national interest is waning.

Oh. I'm confused, there are so many accounts of what happened with the letter in the media. I can see where the letter might languish at Shriner's hospital though.

Here are sketchy notes hastily jotted down from Hannity and Colmes.

It was the first annomous letter he recieved.

"When the letter came, did you consult police?..." I did NOT"

" What is credible about the letter?"...."I don't think it is credible. They said something about Elizabeth, that I don't think is credible." (He would not reveal what was in the letter)

" How was the letter recieved by you?"...." By a place that recieves mail for us. My Father heard about it..I went down and got it"

" What is in the letter?...I can't go into it. He was anxious to release her...He wanted to clear himself....No ransom was mentioned"

" What did the Police say?....." I talked to Police about it, they agreed with me it was not credible) ( My question, if it was not credible, why did you call a press conference?

" How did you get the letter?...." It was delivered by a 3rd party"

" Do you know WHO brought the letter?"..." I went and picked it up" " It may have sat there a couple of days "

Do you know who did it?..." I really don't...all this information on Richard...it was possible."

How is Mary Catherine?...." She had a Birthday Monday. A very good birthday."

" She heard a voice (when Elizabeth was taken), has a tape been played for her?....."I can't give that information it is Police business"

" Has she seen a picture of Recci?"...." She has seen a picture."

Ed said nothing like that on LK, he said it was sent to a friend, who he wuld not identify.....what gives?

Thank you. Earlier, I watched the Smarts' news comference, and this wasn't revealed. That is, where the letter was sent too. Likewise, this was not revealed on FOX this evening, when they were speaking to Ed Smart.

Nancy Grace and Mark Garagos just stated on LK, that the Police rumor is that Recci had nothing to do with this. They said if this is the case, then Recci did not do this, and they will have to turn their attention elsewhere.
