If you're gonna drag some crap up from 40 years ago to prove your point then there's no need to even try to have a discussion with you.
I don't care how people speak in their own homes but when they expect drivers tests and road signs to be changed so they can get around then I have a problem.
As for work, an employer has every right to ask that they speak in english while working and on the premises. I very much doubt that other languages would be allowed in a gov't workplace but not spanish. Show the proof of that one.

It's the self-appointed, hypersensitive 'leaders' and 'activists' I have a problem with, not the average Mexican immigrant. It is always the self appointed, hypersensitive leaders and activists who get the publicity. I wonder if average immigrants are embarrassed by these hair balls?

The Conservative attempt to run off Hispanics ...Oh, you mean like President Bush's plan to give amnesty to millions of illegal immigrants?
Go over to DU where you belong.

Your personal page says you're a libertarian. Does that mean you support, as the Wall St. Journal does open borders, or do you think illegals should be deported? I'm asking since most of the "newcomers" are most likely here unlawfully.

"A country western singer who told his audience at the Greeley Independence Stampede that immigrants should learn to speak English ignited an emotional debate..."
HUH??
What in the world are we coming to??? Are we the United States of America or Los Estados Unidos del Norte America??
Has EVERYBODY lost their cojones (not English) in this country??

French, Russian, Lithuanian, Greek, Ebo, Swahili, Portuguese, and Tagalog My honey's first language is Tagalog, and the vast majority of Tagalog speaking people assimilate into American culture quite well.

Tell Mr Brock not to visit New Mexico. Spanish is an official language here. It has been long before his ancestors arrived.
Will you be joining Aztlan in the next 20-30 years senor? I'll be glad to forward your comments to his official website, if he has one that is.

Look what happened to John Rocker for saying the same thing. I hope this guy tells them to stuff it. I believe he did:
Brock said Monday that while he's sorry if his comments offended anyone, he won't apologize.
"I had the guts to speak out, but I think a lot of people feel the same way," he said.

Looks like it's time to add a new CD to my collection! Way to go, Mr. Brock! DON'T BACK DOWN!

Good for him, and I hope he sticks to his guns. A common language is the one thing that holds us together.

Telling people how to speak among themselves is another thing entirely. I would agree to a point with you statement, but to say that one should learn to speak English in the U.S. is not the same and saying someone should not speak Spanish also.
What language someone speaks in private is there business I fact I would encourage this around a family children so they become fluent is both languages.
However what language someone speaks in public is different if someone is fluent in both.
It can be rude to speak at length in a foreign language in front of a non speaker.
It is a way of talking behind someone back in front of someones face.
I know many non Hispanic that speak fluent Spanish and you would be amazed at what is said in front of you and about you when its assumed you dont understand

I have the sticker. Got it at a gun show.

Again, it's none of your business what other people are chatting about among themselves. You can call it rude, but why are you listening to other people's private comments anyway?
To: Reaganwuzthebest
I made no comments about illegal aliens. All the Hispanics I work with are citizens whose families were here 400 years ago (it is in New Mexico.) They take comments on their language, religion, appearance, food, etc. rather personally. Unfortunately, Brock's comments are just going to drive them to vote for Richardson (an Hispanic with an English name, although a carpetbagger nonetheless) as opposed to Sánchez (an Hispanic with a Spanish name and local background.)
To: Tancredo Fan
And since when does speaking a different language make you a different race? I.e., what "race" did this guy ostensibly offend? I thought they were pretty much Caucasian...SSZ

Or maybe, just maybe, this guy
believes we have a problem of immigrants coming here and refusing to assimilate, and voiced his concern? You know, some folks
do have strong convictions about stuff...

Do you believe if the INS enforced the laws against illegal immigration as we pay them to do, we would even be discussing this? Before the massive invasion in the last 20 years from south of the border, most if not all American Hispanics were assimiliated, knew English and were part of the culture. It's because of all the illegals that have invited themselves in and are demanding we adapt to their ways there's so much friction.
Unless the INS, Congress, the President, or whoever in government takes seriously what is happening in our country, expect us to be the Yugoslavia of the Western Hemisphere in the next decade or two.
To: skeeter
Someone needs to remind Mr Brock that America is a nation of immigrants and those immigrants have ALWAYS demanded their hosts immediate and total respect; the expressing hateful(tm) opinions (such as belief in a common language) will not be tolerated by said immigrants, and that our diversity is our strength. Someone needs to remind skeeter that this statement is totally false. Get a grip skeety!
