With luck, I can get in one of the great picnic games of all time: intergenerational nonserious volleyball. It's played best if there's at least a 40 year age range on both teams, everyone cheers when someone under 10 manages to hit the ball, breaks for refreshments are frequent, and the one-liners are half the fun.
Best one-liner from last year: someone messed up the score in his team's favor. Someone on the other team replied "you just get back from counting ballots in Florida?"
Of course, for intergenerational nonserious volleyball to work, the kids have to be well-behaved, people have to respect the unwritten rules (e.g., don't push a kid out of the way to hit the ball), and people have to not throw a temper tantrum if their team loses. My point? If conservative values are generally adhered to, life can be a lot of fun.
But enough on philosophy. Tomorrow is the day to kick back and hang with two thousand people who think more or less like I do. Much thanks to the Leadership Institute for putting this all together! You folks do a great job!
