The 1776 revolution was sparked, in part, by the Deist Thomas Paine, whom Teddy Roosevelt mistakenly called a "stinking little atheist" since Paine disbelieved the Bible. It's not often appreciated that at the time of the formation of the Constitution, there was substantial pressure to include an allegiance and deference to God in it, but THE FOUNDERS CHOSE TO LEAVE IT OUT. Many at the time were shocked, but others thought it was blasphemy to imply God's sanction of such a fallible, man-made invention like a Constitution. It was also thought blasphemy to put the name of God on such a materialistic man-made object like a coin. Haven't times changed.
