Preventing diseases is certainly doable. But the bottom line is: If there were solid 100% cures for these diseases (especially cancer) - then some business or entrepeneur would have already marketed it and we'd see people being cured left and right.

Sorry, Occam's razor dictates that the reason we don't see hundreds of thousands suddenly cured of cancer and AIDS is because right now WE HAVE NO CURE.

I suggest you take a look at Dr. Laurie Garrett's works for a more realistic view of emerging diseases and microbiology.

Freedom—and not just economic—will expand under Bush.

That was my favorite!

Hello? This is Earth. Is anyone home? Has anyone paid attention to the last year?

While real growth, adjusted for product quality improvements, will probably average around 7% for most of this decade, that will not be true after the 2009 or 2010 recession. The decade of the '10s will "only" average 4-5% grow. Yet that's pretty good.

Riiiggghhhhht...

Keep buying overpriced stocks. Keep shorting silver and gold.

I remain confident that Bush will, in the end, prove the be one of our great presidents.

WOW! The onanism is getting pretty intense around here.

Newsflash! GWB is on pace to come in above The UNIBANGER on social spending. He already apologized/groveled to the CHICOMS about our EP-3 crew, and then there is the whole CFR/Patriot Act/willie-nillie "combatant" status.

and excellent commander-in-chief

Tell me, are gays still openly serving in the military? Did he apologize and grovel to Chicom thugs? Women in combat?

Just what of the disasterous damage caused by the last 12 years did he fix?

But we will learn to thwart them, prevail, and prosper despite the terrorists' worst efforts

You bet! I love the impending police state. I love it more that the GOP is running it (barf).

Honestly, have you paid attention to anything?

he'll be able to assure that the recession in 2009 will be mild, leaving a good start for his successor in the 2010s.

OH GREAT ONE! Thoust predict economic conditions eight years hence, and the severity thereof.

You must be fabulously wealthy, or you are off your meds.

I believe that the consolidation of some 100 agencies within the new Department of Homeland Security will result in a net deregulatory effect in America.

You don't get out much, do you? Since when has gov't EVER had a trend to decrease? Given the absolute orgy of social spending DUMBYA is on, are you for real?

This collection of fantasy is the most onanistic I have ever encountered. I always knew FR became the repository of GWB cheerleaders, but this guy is unreal!

Man will establish a permanent presence off his home planet

From the lunatic rantings of the author, we apparently already have.

and the FBI and other law enforcement agencies will pursue them for what they've become: criminals dressed in green shirts.

Tribunals for accused "combatants," no doubt. When the gov't has no case, they change the rules.

Within a decade we could see the development of an unanticipated occurrence: a threshold of health that leads to indefinite lifespans.

WOW! Just think, Hillary as Senator, not for life, but FOREVER!!!!

Predicting the end to most diseases and the end of natural death...WOW!

Seriously - thorozine.

Overseas, India will rise as a premier capitalist power this decade.

We have departed reality. India is the world's primier basket case.

I hope you don't spout tripe like this under your real name. I hope you don't have children who would suffer if word got out about these nutcase musings.

Africa will continue to experience regional warfare and strife, but it will gradually diminish as the U.S. assists in pacification techniques.

Tell me, how does the high morale, and doing more with less you predicted earlier, jibe with intervening in every African problem?

It does not. I was in the military under the "do more with less crap" and I will tell you it had nothing to do with Clinton. GHWB started the wholesale slashes of the DoD, and Clinton just continued it. It sucked. Getting involved in everyone elses affairs is the most surefire way to bust morale.

I can't even believe that someone in WH basement wrote this crap. You must have come up with it on your own.

By the end of this decade, the bulk of the Russian nuclear arsenal will have decayed to nonfunctionality and Russia probably will not be able to afford to replace it—

The same can be said of the USA.

1-13:

This is all small stuff. On big issues, like the cloning issue of a year ago he was very conservative. He is taking the global warming issue in a most conservative direction. He wants to reorganize most of the federal intelligence and enforcement agencies into one department, a highly conservative position. He seems to have talked India and Pakistan out of having a nuclear war right now, although they might go after it later anyway. That's neither conservative nor liberal.

Net result: Pres Bush continues to be moderately conservative or conservatively moderate.

Alone among the majors, the U.S. is on a pro-growth population trend—not only because we have higher lifetime fertility rates than Europe, Japan, China, etc., but also because of our sympathy for immigration; we bitch about it, but we keep the doors pretty widely open. The odds are that by the end of this century the U.S. will be the world's most populous and prosperous nation. It will have about twice the number of people it has now; at least 500 million. By then India and China's populations may have crashed to only about 400 million each.

Let me see if I can wade through this open sewer of an idea.

We will be the most prosporous nation, after taking in over 60% of our population from the world's most backward nations. The immigrants bring nothing but active gonads, and hands out for a hand-out, yet the small, productive portion of the USA will be able to feed, not only themselves, but everyone else?

What keeps the USA on a growth path, but India and China lose 2/3 of their population?

Picture the entire USA as a Los Angeles and NYC on steroids. Kinda makes you want to disembowel yourself, doesn't it?

The fact that those interests hold the FDA in their hip pocket makes it pretty obvious that the mere existence of a viable cure for the disease would not spell an end to the disease.

Faulty logic. The excess of federal red-tape and corporate interests does not lead us to conclude that there are "cures" just waiting out there to be distributed in mass. Medical evidence and microbiological research shows that it is not federal bureacracy getting in the way; the fact is, there are NO CURES. We are still decades away from a cancer cure, and the HIV virus is mutating so fast that even the supercomputer from Los Alamos that CDC uses to track the strains is having a hard time keeping up. We are now down to the very last antibiotic that can effectively treat staphlycoccus infections. After vancomycin is gone, we are back to the 1940's when it comes to post-surgery infection control. And vancomycin resistance has already emerged in E.Coli bacteria - essential there are strains untreatable by any drug known to man.

So it really doesn't matter whether there is a free market, or a government controlled on - at this point in time, there are NO cures for AIDS, Cancer, Parkinsons. And the initial poster claiming cures of these diseases in the next seven years is simply NOT cognizant of the medical reality. Like I said before, hope is a good thing. But irrational flights of imagination help no one except novelists and songwriters.
