As another instance, the month of Ramadan in particular, has a special significance for inmates in prison.

We used to deal with Ramadama-ding-ding-dong, as we called it, once a year. Convicts would sign up thinking they got extra food. Once they realized that they would not be served lunch, they all would drop off, except for one nut case, who actually believed in that muslim crap.

Hell everyone is innocent in prison. Just ask them.

I heard that at least in one prison, muslims control the food. This makes for a captive audience for converts.

The First Amendment says "Congress shall make no law respecting the establishment of religion or restricting the free exercise thereof..." I'm quoting from memory, but I'm pretty sure I got the wording right.

Originally this restriction only applied to the federal government ("Congress"). After the adoption of the 14th Amendemnt, it was extended to state governments.

So yes, the Constitution does guarantee freedom of religion.
