Also, BTW, there is a growing shortage of: principals. If these school districts were smart, then, they would start taking a chance on new people NOW, while seasoned principals are still around to perhaps lead seminars and mentor the new principals. But, as it is, here's what will happen: the school districts will resist and resist and resist, until there are NO principals, and NO principal-mentors, and THEN, they will start hiring the Taco Bell Managers. They never see the value of trying to think out of the box early on in terms of staffing.

From my reply #1, I meant: urban public schools.

Beckett's got this one figured out. It's a Minority Business Loan Program. The criteria it sets up only apply if the business is minority owned. White men, whether rich, poor or in between, needn't apply.
As far as ending requirements for public school principals is concerned, it seems fine to me. Personally, I'd be supportive of extending the change in policy to the classroom as well.

caltrop, I honestly thought I read something about this new law wherein it said "minority and small businesses" -- but, I can't find it now. Maybe I am wrong. But, if I come across it again, I will post it to you and beckett.

I'm glad you feel that way about the principals, and I was hoping it might inspire you or others like you, to go out there and run a school! :)
As for eliminating all requirements for classroom teachers, well, I can tell you other school districts have done it -- as in NY and elsewhere, and the result is that people leave very quickly. Teaching a CLASS of students is hard. If every teacher had a class of say: ONE student, it would be a very different story. But, that's not the case.
Thanks for your post, caltrop.

They never see the value of trying to think out of the box early on in terms of staffing.Well the school boards and Superintendents are officials holding elective public office. It is up to the voters to see that they do their jobs right.

Thx for looking that info up summer.
As for why I mentioned the bill on this thread, I thought it appropriate, since FL voters had been pinged and news good & bad helps us all to get a full picture of how Bush governs.
Nevertheless I intend to vote for Jeb. I have a high regard for him. I just don't like this bill.

re your post #48 - No problem, beckett. caltrop, in his post #43, doesn't like it either. I actually wanted to post something about it, but it seemed to me the press release was not reflecting other info I read. I am sure that "small businesses" were mentioned somewhere, though I can't recall where I saw it. nevertheless, I am willing to say I could be wrong, and you and caltrop right. But I still don't think Cleggs had the whole story in his blurb about it. Thanks for your post. :)

To my knowledge, superintendents are not holders of elected office -- they are hired by the school board. But, school boards are often unresponsive, and they can certainly be voted out. You're right there! :)

Thanks for the ping.
This is another one of many good ideas that Jeb has implemented to improve the state of public education in Florida. You are correct when you say that the skills for being an effective principal are much different than those of a classroom teacher and there is no reason why we should require the same type of credentials. There is a large pool of otherwise qualified candidates who will now be allowed to compete for the important role of school principals.
Bringing in people from outside the educational clique can only help to bring much needed innovation and varied experience to the school environment. We can only hope that superintendents and administrators will see the value in bringing in such new blood.
