Christianity in general and the Catholic Church in particular never recovered from the advent of the printing press. That instrument broke the clergy's monopoly on language and thought. The publication of religious texts in the readers' native language effectively stripped the exclusivity of discourse from learned clerical few.
In any event, the message heard from many a pulpit and in many a sermon today is that of spiritual slavery and submission to the dictates of the state. Religious institutions had no special immunity from the Gramscian 'long march through the institutions'.
Regardless which one actually said it, at some point it becomes pointless to even discuss it further. Some would have us just stand out there getting soaked to the bone, demanding that we just hand over more money to deal with the dust.
Originally liberals were social conservatives who advocated growth and progess mostly technological(knowledge being absolute/unchanging)based on law--reality...the nature of man/govt. does not change.
Atheist secular materialists through evolution removed the foundations...made the absolutes relative and call all technology evolution(science) to substantiate their efforts--claims...social engineering--PC!
Liberals/Evolution BELIEVE they are the conservatives too!
