You make a good point- I was thinking presidential candidates.

OTOH in our last Senate race in Virginia, Allen- who was a perfect conservative and constitutionalist- had to back off from a correct stance on a 2nd amendment issue to get elected.

Agree 100%, and lets not forget the governors, State legislature, school boards, city councils, county commissioners, township boards, mayors, sheriffs, prosecutors, attorney generals, and dogcatchers either.

Ruled out because they didn't get the full support of the RNC, and the RNC (post Reagan) doesn't seem to understand how to stand up for principals and communicate that.

You're right about Reagan's last budget, but I don't remember that as a capitulation on any campaign pledge or point of constitutional law.

Who ever dreamed up government-run indoctrination camps for our children, anyway? It's interesting who...

"Where exactly does this 'conservatives can't get elected' mantra come from, anyway?"

Try pragmatic RINOs who surrender principle in lieu of watered-down power because they find it difficult to stomach a real battle at the filthy hands of the liberal media and special-interest groups.

It is this centrist philosophy that allows the murdered unborn to be written off as a political casualty of "choice", Saddam Hussein to inexplicably walk free in '91, and "political correctness" to supercede the security of the United States of America.

I wrote in for Howard Phillips. I like him, but I think the party needs another candidate - I don't think he is a good politician.

They were savaged and destroyed by "the popular culture, academia, the media, the salon, the arts. "

It happened.

Some names that come to mind that are closer to my conservative views are Alan Keyes, Newt Gingrich, Dan Quayle...I'm sure there are others...

How about James Inhoff??? As I recall, he was the one who wrote the whole truth about the impeachment trial of X42 and went into great detail about our Security also.

Just a thought.

I am wondering if you are serious about your question. If you are, and this is not another set-up job of why we should support Bush and GOP because the alternatives suck, then I highly recommend voting for the LP. I know I will this November in the IL gubernatorial race. I think until and unless people voice their frustrations with the GOP, the party will not hear them.

Sir, if eight years of Slick Willy didn't propel conservative individuals into action I don't know what could. But even suggesting that Ms. Clinton sully the House again... why, that's not even funny.

The truth will always prevail. If the latest environmental information is true it is true for all, politics nonwithstanding.

Limbaugh was ranting and raving recently about a Republican policy with which he is in disagreement? There's a shock. Still, the globe spins.

Anybody remember "I'm a uniter, not a divider?" That's right, our candidate represents all legal Americans, even those who happen to be what we consider liberal scum. I suspect that when an ultra-conservative candidate is actually viable the Republicans will field one. Such are the times, like it or not.

Plenty of babies and bathwater have been flying out of windows here lately at a time when we can ill afford to be divided.

Do these two things have to be mutually exclusive? Maybe a Third Party could be built from the ground up, while Constitutional Republicans could be supported and reproduced from the ground up.

This is what I'm doing.

I had some help from two friendly chairs as well. They also know I do my part by working my ass off as well. I'm the PAC treasurer for the top pro-2a group in the state - MCRGO(Michigan coalition for Responsible Gun Owners - 30,000 members.). We have a winning record, and we do have some pull in my county. We only have one gun grabber in the county elected, and that's the prosecutor. The sheriff isn't our friend, but I couldn't call him a grabber.

I go to all Livingston GOP events. I've been with them a year, and have already been considered for exec board. After only a year? We're a conservative county, but still. That's shows who works their ass off.

We have 6 candidates for an open state rep seat. All pro-2a. All pro-life.(at least they claim to be) The other seat will be won by a pro-2a NRA member and pro-lifer as well.

I'm running for precinct delegate, and I'm considering a run in 2004 once I gain more experience. We can take the party back, through HARD WORK. Are you up for it?

BTW - I couldn't do this with a third party here. It's next to impossible. I'm DOING IT NOW with the GOP.

"What broad appeal does Paul bring that would expand his support beyond free-market libertarians. He IMO would never be acceptable to the religious right, protectionist America firsters. to be effective you have to get elected. How would that be accomplished given he has tried before and failed miserably?"

First, I don't see Bush winning again. He's alienated the right (the laissez-faire right, not the National Socialist right), and all the Democrats will have to do to bump him out, more or less, is repeatedly display a quote he made not too long ago, recorded in the Washington Post, to the effect that he realized that Al-Quaeda was a threat, but he didn't feel the urgency. That's it. Then, barring a dose of sanity, he'll "oppose" a Democrat and be replaced with another Big Business Meets Big Government lackey who might phrase the rhetoric a little differently, but will advance the same agenda that Bush is pushing.

Second, I'd rather stand with the likes of Ron Paul and jump on the hood of the car that's trying to run me over, bang on the hood, and give the driver the finger, rather than just throw myself under the tires because the driver calls himself He-Who-Is-Not-Named-Gore.

Third, the most important thing we can do now, in my opinion, is make sure that the Internet remains open, fight any censorship, and push for online privacy. The Internet played a big part in the last election, but it's going to play an even bigger part in the next.

Fourth, the day that Ron Paul announces his candidacy, I'm going to go buy three new pairs of tennis shoes, and I'll wear all three out leafletting for the guy. I'm not going to vote for anyone I don't trust.

Excellent point.

I need to think back through the impeachment debacle and recall who stood up for law & principle.

I'm guessing that you people are of the mindset that think "well if it hasn't ditrectly effected my life than it must not be a problem..." When it does effect you it may well be too late. You see the real problem is that the Republican party is not full of Conservatives, it is full of liberal globalists like yourself! Globalism, it's the new Republican party platform! BTW: you'll see just what a microscopic minority we really are when Bush doesn't see a second term in office!

RebelDawg, you are quite correct. This Conservative is not going to punch the ballot for Franklin Delano Bush again.

term limits - what happened?

Just thinking about that very thing a few days ago. Still a good idea. Not the kind of thing to drop just because your candidate has won the election. It has to do with principles.

I am displeased to have learned that a vote for GW Bush is a vote for Al Gore. I think next election day I'll stay home to watch the country continue on its way to hell in a handbasket.
