With tax dollars come government regulations -- be careful what you wish (or sue) for.

I'm afraid you're right.

$1800 ? What planet are you on? Can't possibly be less than 4k, around here they admit to 10k and its really over to 12k when you add in things like the buildings and grounds...
That said: taking tax money and turning it over to parents to home school is a non-starter. You really think the taxpayers are going to turn over $1800 to you to "educate" your kid? What if you go and spend it at the track? Blowing that money is the prerogative of the education establishment.
To: mvpel
Nope. Let 'em keep the money and just leave me alone. This would let the camel's nose under the tent. Once they give you money -- then they will be able to dictate the curriculum, decide if the homeschool teacher is "qualified", to make site inspections, to make their own determination about whether the "kids is learning". Let government schools be government schools.
To: browardchad;wwjdn
Absolutely. When homeschoolers take money from the government because they homeschool then the government will regulate all aspects of homeschool.

They don't need to "give" me anything. Just let me keep my money to spend as I see fit. Cut taxes - drastically.

Perhaps it is time for home school parents to unite and fight for taxpayer money paid by everyone to pay for education of our children. ABSOLUTELY NOT!!
You don't want to invite the government into your home school by doing this! Strings are attached!
Now the better way to do this is to get an exemption from property tax (which is how school funds are gotten in Texas, anyway) when you home school. They don't get your money - you use it to educate your children.
Since it doesn't go to them and then some portion of it (determined by politicians) "given" back to you, they have no power to dictate what you teach.

A group recently did a study showing that actual per pupil spending in Pittsburgh public shools is $18,000. The official figure which does not include things like debt service is $13,000.
You home schoolers not merely have use your own resources to educate our future leaders -- and they will be home schooled kids -- but subsidize the bureaucratic wasteland we call public education.
Home schooling parents should be exempt from all taxes.

Excellent point. Mega dittos. Interesting post. We were discussing the possibilities yesterday of homeschooling. Any websites that you guys recommend would be appreciated. And if we built a small building on our property for a school room could we deduct it and the books, tutors etc. from our taxes as education expenses? Thanks is advance.

Public school administrators and the NEA seem to believe home school familys are not also taxpayers.
To: mikesmad
Right on! Although, that sounds just like vouchers to me.
If they do that, then watch the private school enrollments swell ASAP. Unfortunately those schools don't have excess capacity.

This is exactly what we don't want. The request could not be better orchestrated by Carville and the teachers unions. The remedy would destroy home schooling. That's the goal. It is just cloaked in that "fairness, equity, fair portion," emotional wording crap. Those things worth keeping, come at a cost. In this case the cost is to feed the beast you want to keep out of your life.

Is there any interest in a class-action lawsuit to get our fair share of these tax dollars for home schooling? If so, how do we start the ball rolling? Why? So we can get the government to encroach upon us even more? No, thank you.

I don't think its that. Its just that homeschoolers are a major embarrassment to them. Without the "benefits" of government funding or certification or Education Degrees, the homeschoolers kick butt.
