"All that part of Italy that was instinctively entrepreneurial and individualistic, modern but vaguely Catholic, which had struggled ... to found the material wellbeing of families upon hard work, self-sacrifice and a cock-a-snook attitude towards the state, recognised itself in the smiling face of the tireless little Milanese businessman," writes the historian Paul Ginsborg.

The euroweenies are obviously scared sh**less by this guy. And that's a good thing. Bravissimo, Berlosconi!

How To Tell That You're A Genuine Hero:

The Marxists at the Guardian bless you with a hit piece.

It was ironic that an adventurer like Berlusconi, and one moreover with his own ties to that system, should be the beneficiary of these changes.

Ah yes, the "adventurer" Berlusconi, like the "cowboy" Bush, stands in the way of World Socialism and the Workers' Paradise. Only Castro can save us now.

Only The Guardian would think keeping communists out of power was a bad thing because it "deformed" democracy.

The Berlusconi disease can spread throughout Europe

At last a practical, positive use for germ warfare. No vaccine needed.

The French elections should be interesting. Europe is breaking up. Again.

Germany too. They have a good conservative running against Schroeder. Elections are in September I think.

Who gets the Muslim vote in Germany? The Greens?

I gotta admit, I found the writing style painfully difficult to follow.

Not too many of the muslims in Germany are allowed to vote, they are gastarbeiter for generations. THose that can vote support the SPD or the Greens since those are the less overtly racist parties.

Berlusconi could be the Italian equivalent of Margaret Thatcher, except that Italian politics tends to look like traffic in downtown Rome. It's unlikely he'll be on the scene for a prolonged period.

He's a good man, which is exactly why the Guardian despises him so.

Hey, I wouldn't be surprised if Berlusconi turned out to be the exception to the rule. The problem is, the world has been run for the past decade by girly men. If anyone in the world can recognize the heady scent of testosterone, it's the Italians. ;o)
