Why wasn't it cost effective in say 1950, for example, WWII destroyed china, europe, korea, and japan. That left the US as the sole manufacturing base. It was easy to kick ass when all your competitors destroyed themselves.
The US can be economically dominate again. All we have to do is get germany to invade russia and bomb the heck out of everyone else, then we need to get japan to invade china and korea and then we need to drop a couple of nukes on japan and all will be right with american manufacturing again.

Can anyone explain the housing boom? People are buying houses and autos in perhaps the fastest clip in recent history. Restaurant sales are surging. Retailers across the board are reporting robust sales.

How many highly skilled people are out of work? A lot. I'm one of them.

I think the robustness of the recovery depends on what area of the country you are in and what industry. Home construction never slowed down. Defense manufacturing is booming, especially things like smart bombs. Things related to homeland defense (although primarily government) are booming. Consumer products in general are doing well. High tech (especially broadband and other telecommunications) are in the tank. Spending on capital equipment is down. We can thank Tom Dash-hole, who thinks tax credits to encourage companies to invest are a bad thing, but welfare-like extensions to unemployment are just fine. I don't want unemployment, I want a damned job.

Just a suggestion...have you ever checked out the pharmaceutical trade shows? Call any drug company and ask them if they need your expertise. They do elaborate shows all over the country. Many of the are summer shows also.

My company is in the process of going bankrupt. I was given my 2 months notice about a month ago. I work as a technical project manager, consultant and web designer - I am also published in writing articles about the 'Net. I'm finding increasingly that I have to look abroad to find work - I speak German and Dutch, so it is becoming increasingly likely I'll have to work in either Austria or the Netherlands (again, I used to live there)
The IT market is definitely depressed.
Regards, Ivan

The programming industry is hiring lots of immigrants, and the auto companies are full of immigrants and H1-B visa people. Ive seen lots of american laid off, but very few immigrants are being laid off. In fact, I've seen visa status cited as a reason to not lay off someone on an H1B: "If we lay off Mahatma, he has to go home" - Of course, the unemployed American who can't feed his family is SOL.

After all, we don't want the United States to become a nation of "hamburger flippers," as former Clinton Labor Secretary Robert Reich used to say in the 1980s. You are correct - He did say that in the 1980s, when criticizing the Reagan and Bush Sr. Administrations.
Of course, when the problem really got worse was on his watch under x42. On this he is now uncharacteristically silent.

Suburban DC telecom? Me too (actually, me 3). Which telecom if I may ask? I'm a veteran of the flash-in-the-pan Broadband Office, which you probably are familiar with if you're in telecom in DC.

Sounds like you've been on a rough ride. I hope you do well in sales, though embarking on your first sales adventure in this sector at this time is a pretty daunting proposition.
The only advice I have to offer is to think outside the box, creatively. There are still startups being launched, where pay/benefits are usually superior, in-line with the higher expectations and productivity involved in startup. I tell you, it's ruined me as far as ever working in a 'stable' bureaucratic company again. As uncertain and risky as it is, there's nothing like the juice of launching a new hi-tech enterprise.

I'd probably better not mention the company's name, but suffice to say they have (or at least
had) a boat load of government contracts. While I was working in DC, I spent some time in one of their IRS annex buildings (I got a sick feeling every day I was there). There were at least two scumbag illegals on that crew, and several on the crew working at the DHS building. The owners/managers of the company claimed to be conservatives (well, they loved to listen to Limbaugh, Liddy and O' Reilly, anyway), then showed where their convictions
really were...getting the cheapest labor no matter what it took. What a bunch of scumbags!
