Dear Wifey,

Israel was a collection of nomadic tribes with no history of city dwelling. Even after the conquest of Jerusalem the tribes maintained a level of independance. David could not coerce control over the tribes by merely political means. His installing the Ark in a temple there established a religious center that he just so happened to control gave him the political leverage he needed. This was only temporary since Israel split a mere 20 years later.

Any Sunday School kid knows that Solomon built the Temple, reigned some 30 more years and Solomon's stupid heir caused the split between Isreal and Judah by listening to his Yuppie buddies instead of the people he should have heeded. Something about scorpions, as I recall.

There is room to quibble over the differences between the biblical dates and the archelolgical dates, but nevertheless, the nation of Israel split into Israel and Judah. Jerusalem was rejected as a capital by at least half if the Jews of the day when the temple was intact.

Obvioulsy it was less important to them han it is to the modern day "Israel uber alles" crowd.
