Its not too bad compared to some, but it omits a lot. The raids on jewish settlements by arabs in the 1930's are glossed over. The Mufti of Jerusalem ( a relative of Yasser Arafat ) cooperation with Hitler and approval of the Holocaust. The history of terrorist operations against Israel from neighboring Arab states. The annexation of the West Bank and Gaza by Jordan and Egypt. The creation of the PLO by the Arab states as a means of keeping other arab states in line in fighting Israel - especially as a weapon against Jordan. The creation of the PLO in 1964, long before Israel occupied any of the post '67 territories.

This is where you will hear the phrase "land-for-peace". You see…the Arabs are willing to RECOGNIZE the right of Israel to exist IF they return the lands they got during the 1967 war.

What a bunch of crap. The first time arabs mentioned anything about recognizing Israel was few weeks ago by the Saudis. That's the first time in Israel's existence (over 50 years).

Give me a break. Israel pulled out of Lebanon, did Hezbollah cease its attacks?

London's foreign policy seems to have consistent results:
Cypress
Ireland
India
South Africa
The colonies in America
.....and Braveheart wasn't to complimentary towards London either.
Nice city to visit though.

Of course readers will find lots of faults in this article, but I must say it's one the more well-balanced and non-biased that I've read.

They missed a major point. In 1947 Jordan took Jerusalem. Jordan occupied it for 20 years and they were the brunt of Palestinian terror attacks. In '67, Israel retook Jerusalem and all the other territories mentioned.

Pre-1967 borders means that Israel gives up Jerusalem. THis is a non-starter for them.

The tensions between the British and the Jews boiled over in April 1942 when a boatload of Jewish refugees was denied entry into Palestine. As the ship returned to sea…it sank leaving only TWO survivors. This really pissed off the Jews in Palestine. One person in particular was SOOO enraged he took it upon himself to create an underground Jewish force to kick the British out of Palestine.
That man's name….Menachem Begin.

Some of the information presented is not accurate. Menachem Begin in 1942 was imprisoned in a communist concentration camp in the Soviet Union as a Polish soldier. Released in Siberia under the terms of the Stalin-Sikorski agreement he arrived with the Polish troops to the Middle East in 1943, where with the agreement of the Polish authorities he was demobilized from the Polish Army.

Therefore in 1942 Begin could not be organizing an underground Jewish force.

It leaves out Arab atrocities (but it doesn't harp on Jewish atrocities either). The atrocities are important to understanding the context, a lot of the militancy in Zionism came from fighting off mobs of rioting Arab rapists and lynchers.

Now…even though there was this animosity between Jews and Arabs….the sale of land between the two groups CONTINUED! Jews would still approach Arab landowners (many of whom lived outside of Palestine) and would purchase their properties. By the 1930's….the price of land spiraled out of control. Consequently…the Arab peasants who farmed the land for generations could not afford the rents to their landowners.

Free Market BUMP and PINGS. Interesting article.

today at work, for the first time, I over heard 6 people discussing the middle east situation. I was surprised that 5 of the 6 were anti Israel. I was at my work station. (logged on the FR of course).

For a better read I would recommend "A Peace to End All Peace" by David Fromkin, - The Fall of the Ottoman Empire and the Creation of the Modern Middle East.

In the early 1920's, about 80% of the land in the Palestine Mandate was given to the Arabs and became the Kingdom of Jordan. Was that mentioned or did I miss it?
