As they say, "an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure." Libertarians shamelessly advocate the non-compulsion of the ounce of prevention, thereby forcing the pound of cure onto others. If the people in a society wish to use the law to express their will in discouraging unneeded suffering, then that is a legitimate use of the law. Libertarians would mandate the toleration of evil, and thereby thwart the 1st Amendment right of people to the free exercise of their religion which enjoins the furtherance of justice and mercy.
