``What Arafat really wants is the destruction of the Israeli state,'' says the pre-eminent Arab-Israeli peacemaker, Henry Kissinger. ``He may be willing to make some sort of an interim agreement, which he will consider probably as a stage to the ultimate destruction of the Israeli state.''

There are reports that Morocco would accept him. Good choice. It is west of Tunisia and thus farther from Palestine. The symbolism will be apposite. He was rescued from his last exile in Tunisia by an Israel offering him the olive branch of Oslo. He then chose war instead. President Bush yesterday offered Arafat yet another olive branch, yet another rescue. This will achieve nothing. This will only postpone the reckoning. If this fighting is ever to end, it must be shown that there is a price for violence, terror and duplicity. The price is Elba. No, St. Helena.

Wonder how Chuck (whom I like very much sans one paramount issue) feels about RKBA amongst Israeli citizens?

And like the American attack on Afghanistan, Israel is going into Palestinian territory to destroy the terrorists and the regime that sponsors them.

And like every other Gentile king, Bush will betray Israel.

Hypocrisy, Denial, Deceit, Betrayal
with a kiss
and a treaty.

London Telegraph and MSNBC reported last night that Israeli Intelligence does not want Arafat exiled. They fear he will get a soapbox somewhere (I can see him hanging around the UN or liberal NGOs). Better he disappear into nacht und nebel.

Bush has made it clear he has no sympathy for Arafat whatsoever. He is, however, restrained by political exigencies from speaking his mind fully as we are free to do so here. If I were president right now and acting only upon the opinions and information I presently possess, the crisis in the Middle East today might be much more severe than it now is. Ultimately the most important factor in the Middle East is oil. Until we wean ourselves of our dependence on Saudi oil, we're in a major world of hurt should anything happen to disrupt our receiving it on commercial markets.

I'd love nothing more than to see our new friendship with the Russians culminate into new sources of oil (benefiting the struggling Russian economy and benefiting us by ending our unwholesome dependence on OPEC). Well, I'd be even happier if we tapped into our own resources (ANWR) to fill this need.

That has to be one of the best editorials I've seen on this subject. I wish Bush would read it.

I agree with every word you said. And we can blame that on Daschle, to boot! :-)

Yea! Park Slope has many Hasidic Jews.

You know, the Howard brothers were fine folk from Bensonhurst. As in, Moe, Shemp and Curly.

I have fond memories of Bensonhurst.

"I know some fine folk in Park Slope who would love to meet Arafat."

I live in Park Slope myself. It'd be a one time meeting.

No, I don't worship the image of a hypocrite and a liar simply because he is a Publican instead of a Democrook.
