His problem might be that Hollywood will go out of its way to find "extraordinary" scripts with which to entice him back in.

I certainly hope so. He's one of the only ones worth paying to see.

Nobody in Hollyweird can hold a candle to this man.

No one.

I've always loved Mel Gibson for the very fact he never took himself seriously. I remember his being interviewed and asked about acting being hard work and he really laughed at that. Told everyone that acting was just fantasy and that hard work was working in a steel mill and the like - said he was lucky to play for a living. I also think he is one of the few ethical guys in Hollywood - maybe its because he doesn't live there.

Giving up the fight? I hope not...filmdom would be trading a good Aussie (Mel) for a bad Aussie (Russell)!

"...in a 'based on a true story' recounting of a bloody 1965 battle.."

They just can't except the truth as real, can they!?

One of the good guys in Hollyweird. I'm amazed by his success in Hollyweird given his fairly open, right-of-center beliefs. I'm not sure if he is a Conservative, but non-liberals tend to wallow in relative obscurity with few exceptions.

A Mel fan bump. I wish he would stay and a few dozen of the left wingers would retire. Hollywood would be better off.

Gibson's Hamlet is interesting, even for that which director Franco Zeferelli really should not have omitted.

And Air America. "Flyin' in the wild, wild East."

A certain whackiness in this that once sure rang true.

He might be trying to say that he's going to quit doing action films.
I bet he would still like to sink his teeth into a great dramatic role, now and then.

If he does retire, I hope he takes Danny Glover with him.

I've stopped watching anything with Glover in it.

I can hardly wait to see this extrodinary movie.

BUT...he should NOT call himself "too old" - as he is 10 days younger than I am, and I'm in denial, O-KAY???

Maybe now he can run for some California congressional seat if he is eligible.

In terms of all-time popularity, Gibson is second only to John Wayne. In time, I expect he will surpass the Duke as the older generations die off and Gibson continues to make more "extraordiary" movies.

According to a year by year poll I once read, Gibson passed up the Duke sometime in the early to mid nineties. But I think the Duke still has him beat in terms of duration.

I watched him last evening in "What Women Want." The premise of the movie was not too bright, but he did a wonderful job with the role, anyway.

Let's get Mel to play the roll of the president in a TV version of the "The right wing".
