Yeah and it's very interesting that the same "conservative" pundits who warned about military readiness 18 months ago are now suddenly silent, as if the problem suddenly went away last summer.

I got news for everyone: it takes a hell of a lot more time to fix a decade's worth of deteriation in our armed forces than just a year. As a matter of fact I clearly recall Bush himself as a candidate making the SAME warning speech in late 2000. Did he think a payraise and another billion dollars for the Beltway bandits was going to bring us back to pre-Persian Gulf readiness?

Strong leaders in Republics like ours might be fair but they must be firm. All of our historical leaders who accomplished goals in line with their views were firm and resolute....parsing vaccillating hand wringers need not apply.

However the public does have a right to know whether the job of raising and maintaining an Army is being conducted properly.

Freaking 4 stars SHOULD know better than to say something that provides the press with fodder to slam GW and the military. SecDef did his job. If they don't know any better they should be called down in PUBLIC. The troops are NOT tired. They are pumped. Vietnam went on for years with NO NATIONAL objective or SUPPORT. Our forces will run on adrenaline alone for another year or two. If we need more munitions DON'T TELL THE WORLD about it. All in all very stupid of these 4 bangers.

I agree with the Generals who say our guys are tired. What kind of BS operation is this anyway? Bush and Rumsfeld bombing Caves in Afghanistan? Why are we trying to hunt down and find Al Qaeda? Why are we relying on the treachery of our so called northern alliance allies (aligned with Iran by the way)?

Enough!! Enough Rumsfeld!! Stop bombing caves in Afghanistan!! Act NOW! ACT in a serious way but ACT NOW!!

I assure you that one Neutron bomb will solve all our problems in Afghanistan. They wont need a translator, not even the Persian terrorists. They will all know what that means. Uh-oh...I see the ham-handed fist of one Robert Strange McNamara here. This is what first got us in trouble in 'Nam; I believe in military protocol and tact but keeping truth from the public is wrong, wrong, wrong! Bill Clinton's regime went a long way toward depleting weaponry and tiring our military and it's time that Rummy faced up to the fact, regardless of the DemocRATic toes he has to step on!
