Steyn: To be honest, I was a bit disappointed not to get an invite...But a mutual friend says this wedding was the groom's production.

Gest couldn't bear to invite Steyn, though he must know Steyn's star has risen spectacularly since the days when Liza knew him as an entertainment journalist. It has risen because Steyn can write incisive and magnificent prose and bring to the task an encylcopedic knowledge of culture, both pop and highbrow. That kind of erudition strikes fear in Gest's heart, I would wager, especially if he thought it might be used to examine his little faux-romance with an aging, vulnerable icon whose life has been a very bumpy ride. Better to have Cindi Adams chronicle the event. She can be depended on to say all the "right" things and to refrain from peering at the underlying reality beneath the fabulous fantasy.

Was this "wedding" a practical joke? It sure sounds that way!

I cannot believe that there are enough people interested in the goings-on of celebrities to keep the PageSix type columnists in business. For heaven's sake, who has that kind of time?

Personally, my favorite line was the quote from Cindy Adams: "The interest in this wedding has been incomparable," observed Cindy Adams. "Mrs. Anthony Quinn came specially from Rhode Island."
