The author is a raving loonie, & you aid his cause.

This comment says a lot more about you than it does about the article or his cause, and it ain't pretty.

Actually, Mr. Sabia missed an important insight here when he notes that the costs of sex have rapidly declined.

Libertarians often define morality in economic terms -- people will or won't do something because of the inherent costs/benefits of a particular course of action.

It's interesting to look at today's social problems through this lens. It explains a lot.

Traditional morality in this view is expensive, because it generally involves the rejection of an immediate pleasure in favor of some longer-term gain -- or sometimes even nothing at all.

Libertarian cries for normalization of various vices (and in this regard, Hollywood and the various media outlets are consummate libertarians) simply raises the perceived cost of moral behavior. Moreover, "the market" richly rewards those who best promote the pursuit of cheap and immediate pleasure.

And libertarians -- you, for instance -- tend to loudly denounce those who object to those market forces. It's enough to make one conclude that a truly libertarian society is inherently unstable.

Agreed, men bear just as much of the responsibilty, if not more at times. It is a 50/50 proposistion at least. THe article could have equally said College Guys: Unpaid Whores, because it cuts both ways, and one often loses sight of that. God Bless

Good point, a true gentleman does not generalize terms like 'slut' or 'whore' unless a person has specifically done actions to merit such abuse.

Let's check the dictionary out, OK?

Main Entry: slut
Pronunciation: 'sl&t
Function: noun
Etymology: Middle English slutte
Date: 15th century
1 chiefly British : a slovenly woman
2 a : a promiscuous woman

Main Entry: 1whore
Pronunciation: 'hOr, 'hor, 'hur
Function: noun
Etymology: Middle English hore, from Old English hOre; akin to Old Norse hOra whore, hOrr adulterer, Latin carus dear -- more at CHARITY
Date: before 12th century
1 : a woman who engages in sexual acts for money : PROSTITUTE; also : a promiscuous or immoral woman

Somehow, the definitions seem to fit if one takes the less "professional" view.

They come out of high school already doing all those things, so in college it is NOT anything new!

Men once revered and cared for women. Now it is use 'em, abuse 'em, and lose 'em. Women accept this condition, so I guess it is ok with them.

OPH, honestly....I never went for the slutification of girls even when young. I always just preferred me and one woman at a time....not to say I didn't know a whole slew....more than I'd ever admit to my own girls. I always thought drunk jocks and other cretins taking advantage of drunk or drugged slutty girls was bad even early in High School.....remember "Choo-Choos"???....not me. I was raised by my own dad to never disrespect women like that and I never did.....but I still had a lot of what most folks would call immoral fun but with limits.

Now with two early teen daughters who look like fledgling supermodels and I can't take them to the mall without 19 year old boys making eyes and all that crap....we'll let's just say I'm more sensitive to the issue. I do not want them hurt and I am staunchly anti-abortion so it's definitely "injun country" for me for the next 7 or 8 years. I'm a man.....I know men....it's scary....I think you get my drift.

Now with another baby on the way, I'll be dealing with the perils of youth till I'm planted. I wouldn't want it any other way.

You know we just had a big scandal here involving the local uber prep school for boys and the equivalent for girls whereby 3 scions of prominant families have been charged with gang raping a compromised young lady from another blueblood family. This behavior is an equal opportunity sort.

"I know that we would like to think that young women are liberated and that men now treat a tramp other than a tramp. Sorry, thats liberal la-la land and its not true."

Men still regard and treat them like tramps. They just don't know the difference between treated like a tramp and a lady.

I've always thought that old "Libertarians believe in morality, just not legislating it" was a total lie. Guess I was right! Oh, by the way, I'm Buddhist, not Christian. Buddhists know morality is the only way to be truly happy. But I suppose it would make the Libertarians feel better if that fact is never mentioned.

This whole debate reminds me that, as conservatives, our primary obligation is to protect individual freedom (when it doesn't harm anyone, such as abortion). Now, we can certainly argue over whether premarital sex harms a person but I believe that, on balance, it's a decision that is highly individual and shouldn't be decided by a committee. Namely, us. If we want to have an impact, we should practice what we preach and teach our own children the lessons that we believe are important. It's too late to preach to college-age kids. They've largely been formed. Better to reinforce younger kids and give them the tools they need to make good decisions. If that means having sex, so be it. We pride ourselves on responsibility. We shouldn't take away all responsibility and expect no consequences.

"But I don't think they are the majority."

You have been out of touch. By the time that most girls leave high school, they are well-seasoned.

And libertarians -- you, for instance -- tend to loudly denounce those who object to those market forces.

The only market Libertarians denounce is the one composed of political ideas and the voters that determine their value.
