Allies and Espionage
Jane's Intelligence Review ^ | 3/15/02 | Jane's

Posted on 03/18/2002 9:00:20 PM PST by DrLiberty

It is rather strange that the US media, with one notable exception, seems to be ignoring what may well prove to be the most explosive story since the 11 September attacks - the alleged break-up of a major Israeli espionage operation in the United States which aimed to infiltrate both the justice and defence departments and which may also have been tracking Al-Qaeda terrorists before the aircraft hijackings took place.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has been quick to dismiss a 4 March report by Intelligence Online, a French web site that specialises in security matters (and expanded on by French daily Le Monde the following day) that US authorities had arrested or deported some 120 Israelis since February 2001 and that the investigation was still continuing. The FBI insists that no Israeli has been charged with espionage, but has agreed that an undisclosed number of Israeli students have been expelled for "immigration violations". Justice Department spokeswoman Susan Dryden dismissed the espionage allegations as "an urban myth that’s been circulating for months..."

If the reports from Paris are correct, it would be the largest known Israeli espionage operation mounted in the USA, the Jewish state’s closest ally and one on which it depends for its survival.

Israel’s intelligence organisations have been spying on the USA and running clandestine operations on US soil since the Jewish state was established.

This has included smuggling an estimated 200 pounds of weapons-grade uranium for its secret nuclear arms programme in the 1960s to widescale industrial espionage, much of it conducted by the highly secret Scientific Liaison Bureau, known by its Hebrew acronym Lakam, which was run by the Israeli Defence Ministry and its equally little-known successor Malmab (the Security Authority for the Ministry of Defence). Indeed, the General Accounting Office, the investigative arm of the US Congress, reported in April 1996 that Israel "conducts the most aggressive espionage operation against the United States of any US ally".

While the sort of operation described by Intelligence Online and Le Monde (if indeed the allegation is true) is unlikely to have caused anywhere near the damage to US security inflicted by navy analyst Jonathan Pollard, an American who was sentenced to life imprisonment in 1987 for providing Israeli intelligence with a mountain of top secret material in 1984-85, it would still be political dynamite which could result in a political backlash against Israel which is finding itself increasingly isolated within the international community...

US officials admitted to reporters that the entire investigation had become "too hot to handle", but declined to give further details. However, some FBI officials did confirm at the time that the Israelis were running a major eavesdropping operation that had penetrated into the highest echelons of the US administration.

Jane's isn't as easy to dismiss as The Forward or FOX news. And there is a limit on how many sources one can denigrate.

That's true. Jane's has a bit of a reputation to maintain, and it seems unlikely they would stick their necks out on this unless they had sources that they trusted vouching for the facts "on background".

I doubt FOX news got it wrong either. They are well aware the rest of the media is after their head and would jump at any chance to destroy them. That ABC, CNN, NBC and CBS haven't gone after FOX on this leads me to think they know it is true.

Some do suggest Israel knew ahead of time and these possible spies are tied to that.

Thanks for saying this. A body can't question Israel's prior knowledge of Sept. 11 without getting hit with the anti-semite baseball bat.

This is probably real end to figuring this mess out... if those 'art-dealers' got bugs in the highest offices of the land... good god knows how much they picked up and warning our intelligence of the WTC attack gets sticky, because 'how did they know?'

On the other hand, connecting the dots given the spy ring as a posit gets even stickier. Maybe I can't handle the truth.

What I experience as a 2nd-Amendment activist is that a pro-gun-control message can be wildly inaccurate( eg the "A gun in the house is 43 times more likely to result in the death of a household member than to kill a burgler", "Twenty children per day are killed by guns", etc) yet continue to be trumpeted without the "mainstream" media giving any correction. The people who voice any pro-2A position, on the other hand, have to be meticulous in documenting their position, because any error will be seized upon and used to discredit their entire position.

After the first WTC bombing, the African embassies bombing and the Cole, every intelligence agency must have suspected more was on the way.

We dovetail: 'that shouldn't have been caught' and for me it all goes back to did or did we not have the information to lock down the WTC and if we did and didn't use it are some of our intel guys ready to wear the Traitor label?

I might be able to accept that our intelligence community sucks gravel but I really want to kill my suspicion that the guys that fly fighter jets were jerked around and de-looped and directed to ground their own tactical assets. Considering that the Capitol building and the White House itself were obvious targets.

This, to me, regardless of whatever ME peace-keeping plot we're scamming does not begin to approach the gravity and the near probability of DECAPITATION. Which was patently their GOAL.

Our intelligence agencies have been gutted by Democrats which may explain why they play footsies so much with the Mossad. Our pilots told to stand down? No way. Pre-9/11 our readiness at home was pathetic. I'm surprised they got up within an hour of the attacks. We haven't been only cannibalizing planes to keep others in the air, we've had aircraft sitting on runways for weeks while engineers rebuilt parts because there were no more parts to cannibalize. Aside from that, our pilots would not stand for it. Someone would talk.

What is the point of the map you posted previously on this thread?

As one of the leading israelists on the board, I felt it should be posted as a distraction since some less than flattering yet valid issues were being discussed?

With the purported art students, it's likely that denial will reach screeching levels. The Bush administration would find it difficult to explain why it either ignored or discounted such a large espionage operation.

Because some serious, serious breaches of security will, over time, demonstrate why 9/11 could have possbily happened.

Again, our security really, really sucks or somebody is working overtime to squelch reaction to a serious discovery of a truly dastardly deed, regardless of the political usefullness of the allies supplying this info.
