They're

~Wasn't always like that, either.

Thank you Tacis. Some great replies in this thread, and yours is exceptional. I appreciate everyone's contribution. I've learned a lot from this thread

Acting, fine arts, etc. are all part of a touchy-feely artsy-craftsy realm where absolute or objective standards of goodness, quality or truth are rejected. At the opposite end of the spectrum, you find people like engineers, who strongly tend to be conservative, because they are logical and have to deal with absolute scientific realities all the time. Seems to me the same idea works for pegging the ideological tilt of journalists, school teachers, clergy, etc.

The money is ridiculously easy and an entertainer is in the position where they want to be liked[See the Sally Fields comment]. Personally if I was a movie star with million upon millions of dollars, mansions, cars, women and fame, I could see throwing money at the needy. I just hope that I wouldn't have the arrogence to demand that somebody who works for a living do it.

Entertainers including journalists aren't big in analytical thought. They make their living by attracting attention to themselves. The publicity if free. They like appealing to the lowest common denominator.

"I know I will never see another Hanks, Roberts, Clooney, Baldwin, etc. film. Anyone who speaks out as a lib can forget getting my box office money"
Amen to that! That is exactly what I told my wife the other day. I have changed to being VERY picky about who is in the movie before I will pay my hard earned money to see it!!
Same goes for me.

My wife was a music theatre major and we owned a childrens theatre for several years. Having been around "performers" I can tell you that most of them are liberals because they are completely unstable. They get into acting and performing because they can't stand reality. "Reality" for the overwhelming majority of them is dealing with the pain of abuse(physical and mental)and broken homes. They act to escape.
Ever wonder why so many entertainers are gay? Listen to their life stories. "My dad left when I was three, Grandpa molested me, my mom was a junkie". They sound like a broken record.
That's why entertainers embrace liberalism - becasue it is a fantasy belief where everybody is happy and good and can do whatever they want with no repercussions or guilt.

"It seems ridiculous, but atleast twice in our history we have had 70% or more tax brackets." Wow, I wasn't aware of that!
To: Chris_Patrick
The Liberal philosophy of no consequences for one's actions (it's someone elses fault and if it feels good, do it ) fits the "Hollywood" lifestyle.

Left liberalism is a terrible burden that we carry with us. While there are many conservative Jews (yours truly), we are a minority. But why is that? Today's Jewish slogan is "Never Again" but , as you say Jews still lean heavily to the left--toward communism and socialism (Nazi).
Jews have a reputation for being well educated and intelligent. I'll buy that! Milton Friedman is probably the brightest human being on earth. His wife, Rose, is probably a close second. I think what we Freepers have to do is, re-educate the Jews. There were some liberal Jews--not many-- who actually supported Adolph Hitler in the early days. They learned a hard lesson.

I think that is the case. Sarah Michelle Gellar ("Buffy the Vampire Slayer") has made comments on the crime and gun issues that do not sound left-wing at all.
But they have to keep quiet for a bit. The fact is that there is a blacklist, and it needs to be exposed fully for what it is. Unfortunately, this blacklist is a lot more politically correct than the one in the 1950s...

"The short answer is: to get work, period. "BINGO!. Communist leaners still pack the money. The same question could be directed to pundits and TV talking heads. It started our in the 30's and, although, they decry a 'black list' the 'red list' tells the entertainers and media types where the money is.
Conservatives are the exception everywhere. Women leaders and Jesse Jackson would claim a 'glass ceiling' in the face of these statistics.

I respectfully disagree.
I was in band, chorus, jazz band, swing choir, Thespian Troop, lead actor in several school plays,
and Theatre was my minor in college.
I have NEVER been a liberal.

A cluster of reasons that reinforce each other (some already discussed):
* personal naivete;
*guilt;
* the need to prove that you're really an intellectual doing useful work instead of an air-brained actor (note that misfits, losers and outcasts almost always gravitate to the Left -- no doubt so they can blame someone else for their problems)
* "radical chic," in Tom Wolfe's memorable phrase: it's high fashion, it's necessary to get work and publicity, it's a view shared by all the other pampered sheep -- and there's a big taboo against straying from the flock;
* lastly, I'd note that the Left is a world of make believe that never realizes its utopian dream in real life -- actors have exactly the same make-believe view of life. (There's the subject for a book. Acting used to be regarded as low and shameful. Its rise as a profession coincides with the rise of socialism.)
Conservatives and libertarians in Hollywood have to defy all of this. They are brighter, more thoughtful and gutsier.

There have been so many insightful comments on this thread. I have learned a lot.
"...(with themselves excluded from confiscation as a special category)...".
This statement is one I would like to expand upon. If the U.S. finally becomes a third-world cultural and political entity, who will make out like bandits? Elites of all stripes. In third-world countries, elites are able to do anything they want to anyone they want. They are not subject to legal restraints like the rest of the subjugated population as long as they're paying off the right generalissimo. No one has to be a genius to figure out why Slimeywood (plus many other categoies of "elites") support multicultural, pc, leftism and unlimited immigration from the third world (leftism).

Actually, it was worse than I thought. We actually had 90% tax rates prior to JFK. JFK reduced it the top rate to 70%. Reagan later reduced it all the way down to 28%. Bush I increased it to 33% and Clinton to 39.6%.
To: Always Right
Wow!! 90% is just mind boggling!!
To: Space Wrangler
But let an aspiring actor or technical type announce they have conservative ideals, and it's a career killer. Isn't this reverse McCarthyism?

Better:,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,Why are liberals mostly entertainers?
