Many pacificts do, in fact, hide behind men with guns when the going gets rough. They do, after all, call the police when they hear prowlers, and do not request an "unarmed" car to respond.
But even those who are consistent in their pacifism are wrong and misguided, IMHO, in that they would sacrifice their wives and children to their ideal of non-violence in the face of a deadly assault.

I know a man who was drafted. Asked to be a medic, so he wouldn't have to shoot anyone. He didn't think it was right for the U.S. to be in 'nam, and didn't want to compromise his own principles.
Had it been December of '41; he'd have been the first to enlist... He just didn't think South Vietnam was worth defending.
