An Orthodox priest from Russia told me that, the "onion domes" are t symbols of candles which are lit when a prayer to God is offered.

I think that is a beautiful thing.

Oh, I know you meant no harm....I was just thinking how cute it would be if some of the penguins were outside the Church sometime and started making all that noise and I wondered, if they would "drown-out " any human singing.

I remember seeing a large R.O church in NYC. It was quite beautiful.

Did you know that there was a Greek Orthodox Church, St. Nicholas, destroyed when the first WTC tower collasped on it? It was a small church but an historic one. There are plans to rebuild it and money has already been raised to do it.

That would be a sight to behold. I guess that we should be thankful, though, that penguins can't fly. Doves they ain't....

If you "want beautiful" (as some say in NYC) you should go inside an Orthodox church or cathedral on Good Friday and late Saturday night. I don't believe that anyone would fail to be moved by the impressive services and processions that they would experience therein.....

Are you sure that it was the St. Nicholas church that was destroyed? I recall reading an article on how the congregation was soldiering on and serving those involved in the recovery and salvage immediately after 9/11 and beyond.

Yes, I am absolutely sure that it was St. Nickolas Greek Orthodox Church. There were articles even here on FR.

The Italian city of Bari even sent thousands of dollars to help rebuild it. St. Nicholas' relics were removed (stolen) from Myra, Greece many, many years ago and now repose in Bari. So, they wanted to help a Church bearing his name.

The Archbishop of the Greek Orthodox church wrote that the Church will re-build and also set-up some memorial for those who died the WTC tragedy.
