It takes targeting terror, apparently, to make Americans the target of full-bore anti-Americanism. We've all read a lot about this kind of hostility in recent weeks--America as demon of the world, as portrayed in, say, Le Monde and the Guardian. I have my own tale to tell, much closer to home.

Lies, lies, and damn lies, not including the intimidation against the witnesses of American sufferance and truth.
These people are political felons who do more than express, but falsely accuse and intimidate victims and witnesses of victims. These people are evil beyond a doubt, not brainwashed, but whose evil has been illuminated by the tempting and seducing snippings of evil.
America shall stand united around truth. They are united by evil.
Your sarcasm doesn't wash.
And for the same reasons - because of the affront to their egos and pet theories that the success of anyone who does not listen to them involves. And because our power, simply by not being their own, not for anything we do with it, is in the way of their own mad dreams of how essential their precious insights and their leadership are to the future of mankind.
And that is exactly what the powers that would have ruled Europe before thought, too. Russian communism and German militarism, both. Our power was simply in their way, and they ran across us on their way to ruling the world. Some even here wish the Germans had won, and that is all you are hearing from that other fellow in the thread. He is just like the present euro-weenies, and the Ladenists, and the Commies and Prussian militarists before him. If the US would just get out of their way, then they might rule the world according to their mad fantasies, or their favorite theory, region, people, or system might.
And we ought to understand that the justice with which our power in the modern world has generally (though certainly not always) been exercised, is not a mitigation of all of this to the high and mighty of the rest of the world. On the contrary, it is an aggrevation of the affront. Ordinary non-political people might care, not being too concerned with who exercised power, and more concerned with whether it is exercised justly. But the ambitious, the politically active, the theorizers - oh, with them it is another story.
It is much more acceptable to have rivals who are unjust. After all, any fine fellow may be oppressed by the power of others, and thwarted in all his schemes by the sheer strength arrayed against him. But only unjust men are opposed justly. It galls all the more, therefore, if we seem at all just - in their consciences, mind. Of course they will not come out and say so, and instead must try to blacken any such impression. But that is because their own ambition cannot admit that it is itself unjust.
Therefore, some will hate us merely for the fact of our power, and our having achieved it without listening to their patent medicine cures for the human condition. A prosperous nation without communism was an affront. A strong nation without militarism was an affront (and still is, to some). A civilized nation without Islam is an affront. A land of opportunity without soft socialism is an affront.
But a just world power is a redoubled affront, because its mere existence proclaims to all would be rulers of the world that they are not only not needed or wanted, but that their craving for power is positively evil, the desire to substitute partiality and failure for justice, out of nothing but naked self-regard.
We ought to wear the hatred of the power-mad schemers of the world - every one of them - like a halo.
Guess you read different history books than the rest of us.
How about the transistor? Or computers... Or...
The Europeans don't like us because they think we are uncultured and uncivilized. They don't understand how we can be genetic trash (in their view) and at the same time be rich and powerful and only growing more so.
They think with their superior breeding and wealth of history and culture they are being denied their rightful place in the world by us, the brutish brash blue jean wearing American
I strongly disagree. I think their world is totally of their own making. Let them live in it...
If The Declaration of Independence and The Constitution for The United States live on in the minds of mankind, we will have contributed more than most.
They've said it before, haven't they?
