Earthquake!

I "missed" Whittier Narrows, but that's because I was in a little pick-up heading to work at 70 MPH. I was havin' my own earthquake in that little truck! I heard the DJs on the radio going off about a "major earthquake" and thought they were out of their minds. Then I looked in the rear-view mirror and saw Tujunga Canyon filling with dust.

The quake was not far from Moorpark, which sits at the end of Simi Valley. I'm located 4-5 miles from there and I'm pretty sure they didn't feel much more than a couple of hard jolts.

No, it is just Satan under the ground moving around getting ready for his buddy Bill Clinton's arrival in Cali later this week. Thats all.

After the Northridge quake we said it was the Devil having a nightmare. Come to think of it, the thought of Clinton arriving would proably even give the devil the shakes.

I know that it isn't unusual for there to be a series of aftershock but to be able to feel that many in that short of a time is pretty intense. I was born and raised in SoCal, move to Central Cal in 80, so I have felt many in my day.

During the Sylmar quake in 69 my Dad worked for LA County Flood Control. He didn't come home for 3 days. They had to check every dam, flood control channel, and waterway in the LA basin.

I had to run out after Northridge to turn off the water. Our hot water heater had ripped its pipes loose. I turned off the water and then looked up. It was amazing! The lights were off in most of the city and you could see the stars. I stood there for a few seconds looking at them. I was thinking "Wow... Look at all the stars! ...I'm bare-assed naked." At which point I decided that I really should go back inside.

I thought that it was Joshua Tree that was considered the pre-shock for Landers. Wasn't Big Bear an almost simultaneous event?

I was in the big quake of 89. I was a travel agent working in a newer mall that was made to withstand earthquakes. Unfortunately all the huge filing cabinets were bolted together but not to the floor so they came over on me and another lady.

I was being squished, I couldn't move.

Then when it stopped shaking 2 guys that were in the office and 2 that were in the mall came in and saved us. They were like guerilla warfare men, like the incredible Hulk, doing everything they could to pull us out.

Thankfully we were ok. I was badly bruised and the other lady broke some ribs but we were ok. I had lived in California almost all of my life and had never experienced an earthquake like that. It was unbelievable.

Clear skys here. It's cold, however. I remember seeing some weird weather the night before the Whittier Narrows quake. I was living not far from the epicenter at the time. We had a sudden gust of warm wind carrying ice-cold rain. A co-worker's wife joked that it was "earthquake weather". The next day, he told her not to make jokes like that.

I remember Big Bear happening first. (In the morning.) When Landers went that evening, it triggered smaller, almost simultaneous, quakes up and down the entire State.

Yeah, it was weird how the Northridge quake was so loud and then it got all dark. I noticed that most of the stuff made out of old brick totally fell apart. One friend's whole store in Santa Monica collapsed. Not to mention the 10 Freeway. Hey, come to think of it, Riordan did a good job getting that rebuilt.

Glad I am now far away from it. Northridge did make Sylmar seem like childs play though.

Thats why I asked. Wind has come up here in last 20 mins or so. Seems that the weather has gotten weird a few times right before a quake. Another interesting note, I live right under the departure path of Lindbergh Field, about 1 mile from the airport in Point Loma, and from the time this thread was posted, was about 45 mins before another plane took off. Not normal, had us wondering.

After Northridge, the weirdest thing I remember was the sound reverberating underground. The Valley is basically a big bowl filled with sediment. (It's an old seabed.) The sound of the quake bounced around down there for several minutes. You know... it's very strange hearing noises coming at you from underneath!

When Northridge hit I was at Balboa and Chatsworth in Granada Hills. I had a pit bull for 3 days that I found shaking in the corner. The owners came and were happy they found her. There were dogs running loose in the streets everywhere. All the fences came down. I was born and raised in that area. So glad to finally be out of there. Man what a diffrent life here. It is so nice not to hear spanish everywhere you go and see graffitti all over.

But I thought I heard thunder about the time this happened and went outside and could not see anything that would account for the noise.

The moon was visible through the clouds and there was a light mist and could not see any clouds that might account for the noise.

There is a fault line running through Ohio.

I don't know why the other fault lines (other than Ca) are or seem less active.

Can someone post a map of fault lines? I think there are a few in the mid and eastern US.
