I think it would be cool if the DVD had a sub-title set that just pointed out all the little things like this as the movie played.

Did you notice that once this three hour movie was over, everyone went directly to the restroom?

My wife and I were smart: We went before.

Did you notice that once this three hour movie was over, everyone went directly to the restroom? Yup, and there as a line in the men's room!
My 12-year-old couldn't make it and had to leave during the movie (that's what he gets for ordering a large Pepsi)...

Apparently, some of the missing scenes (e.g., Galadrial's gifts to the Fellowship) will be included in the "Director's Edition" of the DVD (to be released in May?) In the end, Jackson apparently thought it best to keep the film to around three hours.

It certainly was easy to miss those things while dozing off. That movie was a BIG BORE! Three hours in an uncomfortable seat in a freezing theater didn't help.

I took my eldest jedi yesterday. My second time to see it and his very first movie ever seen in a cinema! We're going again this Saturday. It was fabulous.
The things I noticed this time that I didn't notice the first time was the cloaks and clasps, and that Legolas trod on the top of the snow while the others sunk.

I did both. I've seen it twice now, and the second time I SWORE I was going to look for the "odd bits", but I'm not very good at that, because I get pulled into the story. I did notice that although they didn't mention Galadriels other gifts, you could see the cloaks and the pins in the final scene. Oh well, I guess I'll have to watch it a few more times.

I went to the late morning matinee. The 2 cups of coffee and the large soda got me. BTW, I did enjoy the movie.

Let me ask: Have you read "Lord of the Rings"? My observation is that those who are huge fans of the books are huge fans of the movie (which speaks well for the director, since generally movies don't do justice to books). However, I have talked with a few (very few) who found the books boring (but then, these never made it past the first chapter).

When the Fellowship leaves the Lady of the Wood they all receive a gift, but you only find out about Frodo's. I'm going to bet dollars to donuts (and I REALLY like donuts) that any details from the first movie that are important to the later movies will be covered in the intros to those movies. They're also going to have to explain lembas or figure out some way for the orc hunters and captives to be eating.
Shalom.

No, I haven't read "Lord of the Rings." But, then again, I didn't read "Harry Potter" either and immensely enjoyed that film.
My daughter has read the first book of the trilogy and loved it. I picked it up and could not get past the 5th page or so. As for fantasies, the Ann Rice novels (Taltos, etc.)concerning the Mayfair witches are more interesting because they deal with actual Celtic lore.

One thing I found fascinating about Tolkien's tale is that he created his own lore.

Maybe MTV will do a "Pop-Up Video" version! ;) I like the idea, but I'de rather have the info appear quietly in the black bar area and have it on the DVD. DVD's can have multiple subtitle tracks, they don't take up that much room so it is very doable.
Ever see that "pop up video" episode of Drew Carey?

The DVD release is scheduled for August. I suppose I'll be buying a DVD player before this.

They're also going to have to explain lembas or figure out some way for the orc hunters and captives to be eating. Personally, I expect that Galadriel will play a greater role in all three movies than she did in the books. This is a way of dragging in an occasional female character. The easiest way for them to do this is to cover her giving of gifts to each of the Fellowship thru flashbacks at appropriate points in the story. For instance, we might flashback to her gift to Gimli just before he challenges Eomer in defense of her honor. And Sam's gift has to be in the ROTK to explain the quick recovery of the Shire from Saruman's devastation.
Speaking of female characters, I've seen a couple of stills with Arwen and Galadriel in what looks like Lorien. Not in the book. And I'm really looking forward to Eowyn!

Fran Walsh is not Peter Jackson's partner, she is his wife.
