Thank you for the fine article, n9te. Very few people can claim to be "pure" descendants of anybody in the ancient past. Invasions, migrations and all the ways in which previously distinct populations have intermingled, do indeed make "racial purity" almost impossible to establish. As an example, I am Scots on my mother's side, but German on my father's. But considering all the times Scotland, as well as Germany, have been invaded, occupied and settled by outsiders, how likely is it that I am actually half Scots and half German? Not very. Nonetheless, we all trace our ancestry as best we can and must go with the greatest probabilities. In light of this, I would have much less right to call myself Polish than somebody who is, say, third generation Pole, even though that particular Pole might very well have German and Russian ancestors four generations back. Did you know that there are some fairly well-argued and well-supported dissertations out there which maintain that the most likely point of origin for present day "Palestinians" is actually Europe? Fascinating! What I find especially amusing is that Adolph Hitler today might well have more "right of return" to Israel than many who claim to be Jews. If I'm not mistaken, one of his grandmothers was a Jew.
