First, the distinction between "young woman" and "virgin" is minimal. In both Jewish and Greek society, a young woman was a virgin; otherwise, she was a harlot. So the authors of LXX probably did not see a major crux here. After all, Greek texts refer to young women freely as "parthenos" or "kore".
For that matter, so do the Hebrew. The word "almah" occurs, for example, in [Gen xxiv:43], [Ex ii:8], [Canticles i:3, vi:8], and in all four places it is referring to an admitted virgin.
Secondly, how do we know there was a mistranslation? We have no extant contemporary Hebrew text to compare against LXX. The rule in these cases is, unless we have sound reason, lectio prior potior, the earlier extant text takes precedence. So the burden of proof is on those who assert LXX to be wrong, and the MT to be right.
Thirdly, the Christians translated LXX? There is exactly zero evidence for that. The Essenes translated it? Again, zero evidence. For that matter, zero evidence there was any Essene community in Alexandria; the only substantial non-orthodox community was the Therapeutai.
Fourthly, the Tanakh was translated "into the language of the pagans". Foul ball, ET - you know full well Greek was the language spoken by 80% of the Alexandrian Jews, and the translations were done for the Jewish community, almost certainly by members of that community.
Finally, I remind you tha the Alexandrian Jews had no discernable motive for mistranslation, and you give none, just stuff about pagan traditions "creeping in". But the Masoretes had a clear and compelling motive for mistranscribing that same text, didn't they?
You're right about that, but its been years since I read the book. My interpretation at the time was that the authors used a rather broad reading of the scrolls to establish a Pualine hijacking of Christianity w/ the Vatican complicit in a cover-up to prevent this "truth" from getting out.
Subsequent publication of the missing documents have pretty well debunked this view (at least I've heard nothing more of it).
Given how many people have lived, I would say that many of His words have yet to be discovered, were destroyed, or were left out of the final version of our current Bible (and whoever was responsible for leaving out those words probably suffered the consequences). I'm not saying the DSS are or aren't God's words. I'm only saying that God speaks when He chooses to speak, therefore the DSS might be from God.
