Well the Western Empire began collapsing a bit earlier than that, around 235 AD during the ‘Crisis of the Third Century’.
And because American culture has its roots in western Europe we tend to forget entirely about Byzantium and the Eastern Empire.
Constantine moved the capital of the Empire from Rome to Byzantium aka Constantinople in 330 AD. The Roman Empire survived in the east until 1453 when it fell to the Muslims.
