How exactly is the engine attached to the wing? What could cause it to separate from the wing? There were reports of an explosion on board, why then would the engine separate from the wing so cleanly? What you reckon on this?

I agree. As I posted earlier, I wonder if the intended target wasn't the UN building. I guess it'll be a while before we hear the official version. But many people won't accept the accident theory. I know I'll have a hard time believing it. You see, I started wearing my tin foil hat on 9/11. I even wear it in bed now...

It's the AP's list as of today's date... You're a good scrutinizer... a few are missing.

How exactly is the engine attached to the wing?

The engine isn't attached to the wing, per say. Rather, it's attached to a pylon that is attached to the wing. It's been a while since I pulled pylon mounted engine, but here's how it works (at least on the ones I worked on)

The engine has a mount point on top of the engine, forward of the center of gravity. This is a trunnion mount (two mount lugs). On the pylon, there is a single lug hanging down. The single lug fits between the two lugs, and a linch pin is inserted (and depending on the system, may be safety wired into place).

There is a mount framework for the aft portion of the engine. This framework extends from the wing mounted pylon to (at least on the engines I worked with) two "coke bottle" mounts (one at the 3:00 and one at the 9:00 postion). These are also called thrust mounts, this is where the force from the engine is transferred to the wing mounted pylon.

It's difficult to explain without being able to move my hands around and show you (or at least draw it on a piece of scratch paper).

Again, it's been a while since I worked on pylon mounted engines (trained on B-52s for that). Most of my work was on fuselage mounted engines (ten years on F-15s and F-16s as a jet engine mechanic).

Don't fly. It's not worth the risk, trains or buses would be far safer or else drive.

How many people have died in car crashes since 9/11? The US averages somewhere around 50,000 fatalities per year, so statistically we should be approaching the same number of deaths in the two months subsequent to 9/11 as were sustained in the terrorist acts.

Auto crash fatalities tend to happen one or two at a time in geographically diverse areas, so we don't pay them much attention. Hearing about a death in a rush hour wreck just becomes part of the background noise on the evening news, or an item on page 5b of the local paper.

Bottom line - keep your head on a swivel out there regardless of how you travel. Be aware, be safe.

Of course, the first thing that came to my mind was that Bush's tax cuts caused this to happen... /sarcasm

I was worried about Chelsea, myself! Geez, how does today affect her?

The Gulf Air A320 crash of last... August? September? is one that comes to mind. Good list, though.

this pic is of an A310 but the engine mounts are the same, I think you can see the pylon that comes down from the wing and holds the engine housing!

I agree. As I posted earlier, I wonder if the intended target wasn't the UN building.

ABC showed the flight path for the Demonican Republic. It went SE and arched around to it's landing.

The crashed plane was going SW, tward the UN building, if it weren't , why was it way off couse!!!

The airlines said they lost communications at take off.

If our planes shot it down, would we be told?

Of course there is a Jihad declared against the US. There's no evidence it's been called off. I suspect mechanical failure done intentionally by Muslim maintenance workers.

"He's much more inclined to the "accident" theory with this one today..."

Yer hubby may indeed be right, but I just don't like the timing (two-month anniversay of WTC and while UN is getting together to talk about "Terrorism") and the location (New York)...very coincidental, IMHO.

From the NTSB Safety Recommendation A00_121_124, dated December 12, 2000, dealing with an on-ground unconstrained engine failure of a GE CF6 (see http://www.ntsb.gov/recs/letters/2000/A00_121_124.pdf).

"This incident raises serious safety concerns because, if it had occurred during flight rather than on the ground during maintenance, the airplane might not have been able to maintain safe flight. Examination of the airplane revealed that a portion of the HPT stage 1 disk penetrated the left wing just inboard of the No. 1 engine pylon. Investigators determined that this portion of the disk, which is approximately 140 square inches and 45 pounds, penetrated a dry bay, made a 1-inch-wide vertical cut through the lower half of the forward wing spar, and penetrated a fuel tank before exiting through the top of the wing and passing over the fuselage. Examination of the engine revealed that the disk rupture split the engine in half, leaving the rear of the engine joined to the front only by the fan midshaft. The disk had separated from the shaft and was completely missing from the engine. Two pieces of the disk, which amounted to about two-thirds of it, and three blade slot posts were recovered. Although an extensive search was conducted, the remaining one-third of the ruptured disk (the piece that passed through the wing) was not recovered. Trajectory analysis performed by the Safety Board indicates that it may have landed in the Delaware River, which is adjacent to the airport."

But the breakup into multiple parts is still a bit troubling.

For some reason, I kinda doubt it...
