We have Bible Ribbons. ;) Little slivers of evangelical Protestantism that are dispersed throughout the land. ;)

A British deserter? Can one be a traitor this
often in a month without being a laughing stock?

Hey ... easy on the British. At least they're talking about indicting these traitors if they have the bad taste to come back alive. That's more than our gov't is doing now, as it holds all these spies and saboteurs on "immigration charges," acting as if it has no idea what to do with them. FDR certainly did in WW II, when Nazis came ashore and our gov't hung six of the eight.

And several weeks ago I went to a Mass and heard how the Muslims are oppressing our Christian brothers in Nigeria - and the Christians were defending their churches armed only with spears. Sod them. Give the Christians the guns and benefits of our technology. Let's smash the damn Jihad against the wall, crack it open, make them bleed so that they will NEVER threaten us and our bretheren again. Some Western schoolkids have been buying the freedom of Sudanese slaves. They constantly receive complaints that their money goes to buy weapons and thus further the slave trade. Apparently these complainers think nothing should be done at all. But perhaps the better route is to form a small organization of military professionals who will pull numerous John Brown raids on the slave traders.

Anyone ever read the novel
1985 by Anthony Burgess? It's kind of a pseudo-sequel, or reworking, of Orwell's
1984 - a futuristic society with no individualism (although in
1985 the reason is not because of IngSoc and doublespeak and totalitarianism, but because the labor unions have gotten so much power that you can't get a job and don't even really exist unless you're a part of one....Burgess must have been preoccupied with labor unions when he wrote it...)
Anyway, I digress. A very interesting aspect of the novel was that Islam seemed to have taken over in England. It's not discussed in great detail why or how this came about; it just seems to be part of the background that many/most people are Muslims now, Mohammed is cited often, and that's what guides some of the teen gangs, etc.
When I read it (pre-9/11) I found it unrealistic and a bizarre concern. Strangely, now it seems somewhat prescient....

You ever notice the word "ham" is right in the middle of "Mohammed"?

IMO, The gossip tabliods have displaced the Gospel of the Bible in England.

The Brits long ago gave up faith in Jesus Christ..there is almost no one to contend for the faith there...so it is believable that the British Isles will soon be an Islamic State..

As I lay me down to sleep I pray the Lord my soul to keep..and by the way... Dear God,
May all the devout Islamic people of the earth unite and travel to Jalalabad to fight for their belief.
May our military and religious belief be enough to send the Islamic Fundamentalists a fatal blow.
Amen

Sorry for late reply... modem problems. The deserter I understood was fighting for the Taliban so he's managed to betray his own country and the side he joined. I expect he found the prospect of dying for his supposed principles a little less attractive once it was likely to happen.

Not that it matters, but I don't think Muhammad even wrote the Quran. It was written after his death.
