From a 'nice arm' to 'faint praise' by Rubin.

I like the way the Chinese do it when it comes to press conferences," No doubt, state run media is a lot less pesky than a free press.

January 1, 1979, the US and China established diplomatic relations after US President Jimmy Carter switched recognition to Beijing from Taipei.
It is true that China has grown wealthier since then. Their GDP has now reached US$1 trillion.

A little dose of capitalism does wonders. :^)
If they added a little dose of freedom and we might have a true rival!

I visited shanghai in 1982 and you could smell it from 10 miles out at sea. It had thicker darker smog than Lost Angeles on its worst day. The river was...yellow-green. If it really has changed, then I think I know why W is impressed.

Maybe we could send Helen Thomas over there

Gee, I don't really know for sure, but I think that Our President was NOT saying that he preferred state-run media. Did you think he was saying he likes the way the Communists do things?

It really has changed. I used to visit Shanghai every 3 weeks or so over a 5 year period from 1995 and it was astounding to see new buildings almost every time. It's probably the most incredible transformation of any city in world history. More development in Shanghai in the last 5 years than in Hong Kong since WW2.

By the free press do you mean the democratic, liberal Bush can't do anything right, I wish Clinton had a chance to show his greatness, don't believe what you see only what we tell you BS artists? Well it looks to me like Dan Rather and Tom Brokaw are going to be a lot less pesky this time around.

Our relaxed, informal President does it far better than Clinton -- who would have insulted everyone by showing up late.

Does anyone else feel strange about this? It used to be AMERICA and AMERICAN cities that were built up fast, and awed the world. AMERICA was the richest nation on earth, and the envy of the world...NOW CHINESE cities are the marvels, as our US cities crumble, are ridden with crime and poverty, and our manufacturing base is GONE!!
Is THAT what FREE TRADE has brought us? I think it's time to re-assess the global free trade deal. Somebody just re-sold us the Brooklyn Bridge.

People who have visited Shangai (and not the country side) have said that China is a strangely highly capitalistic and anti-freedom nation at the same time. You can make money but you cannot do politics.

Please, isn't he allowed some humor?Oh, is that what that was? Sorry, stilts.
