Cottonwoods, sweetie! They blow all the way down to the coast this time of year. Good god, everyone is paranoid. Whoever posted this must be Osama Bin Laden's cousin.Or girlfriend. Channel 5 says balloon spiders - natural phenomena, totally harmless. See Post #262
How long have the rest of you posting here LIVED IN TEXAS?
I can't address the REST of those posting but I can address how long I have lived in Texas. See TYR Home

"Sir/madam/it, do you not think people know what a cottonwood tree's seed bundles look like?" rwfromkansas
Uh, yeah, buckwheat, that's the point. Clearly, all these newbie Texans DON'T know what all that cottonwood flying through the air down here (BTW, as it does EVERY October, regardless of whether or not Tom Brokaw is having a frigging cow)is NOT "the attack of the mullahs". (But we'll remember your name - you tried to tell everyone on this thread they were breathing death. you sure you're not Osama's cousin?)

I don't live in Texas. I follow from 4-10 threads at a time.

I know 'cybe'. I was adressing that to someone else.

You need to read the entire thread. Some sources(including TV news) state that they are spider webs. If you are going to participate in this conversation, please pay attention. {:o)

There will be no rope smoking here!

If this person was the life-long Texan they claim to be they would know cottonwoods seed in the spring, not in October.

Cyberwatcher said: "I don't live in Texas'. Uh, duh, well then get your ignorant self the heck away from this thread masquerading as some "concerned citizen" as you try to help your good friend Osama spread his terror in this state, thankyou.

Wow! Now I am a terrorist because I don't live in Texas? I didn't know you had to reside in a state to participate in a discussion about that state.

"If this person was the life-long Texan they claim to be they would know cottonwoods seed in the spring, not in October.? DKM Uh, (oh boy, it's this bad on FR now is it, huh?) Of COURSE Cottonwoods bloom in spring, doofus, it's the expendsed seedheads which fly like crazy in the fall. Are you sure YOU have ever spent any time in Tx? Obviously you don't know anyone who has suffered from the fall allergies from juniper (cedar fever) and cottonwood (aspen) .

"Now I am a terrorist because I don't live in Texas? I didn't know you had to reside in a state to participate in a discussion about that state" So outrageous it doesn't deserve a response, but YOU are the one spreading fear on this board. If the shoe fits, wear it, Wassabi.

I deeply regret if my chosen headline caused more alarm than curiousity, as such was not my intent. I simply wanted to get other people to see this phenomena while it lasted (not knowing then that it would last over eight hours), and really could not think of anything else to use, at that time.
It was a phenomena that I could not explain, and the best, quickest place I knew to get more info would be from my fellow FReepers in this fine forum (geez, there I go with the alliteration thing again).
As to its appropriateness/level of interest, I can only say that it generated nearly 300 replies on a day when most other articles averaged about 10. Along the way we had some fun, met a few new folks...where's the harm? We all need to laugh every now and then, perhaps now moreso than ever.

Have I been spreading all the fear? I haven't even seen any fear here. Just a few people discussing a situation.

"Of COURSE Cottonwoods bloom in spring, doofus, it's the expendsed seedheads which fly like crazy in the fall.....My, my, not only are we rude we are uneducated as well. Go to the bottom of this "doofus" federal botanical site here to see how wrong you are.
Cotton wood seeding occurs from mid-may to July
Bzzzzzzzzzzt.........wrong again.

You don't need to apologize for posting. MOST people LEAVE if they don't like a topic.
To: leilani
Cottonwood reproduces by seeding, unlike many other flood-plain trees which regenerate by sprouting. It flowers in the spring, before it leafs out. It releases its seeds, each carried by downy white tuft, or "parachute," in anticipation of traditional spring floods and winds, the principal mechanisms for dispersion.Bzzzzzt......wrong again!
