America stands at a crossroads. Return to God and let Him heal our land (II Chr 7:14). Or continue to turn our backs on God and have Him remove His hedge of protection.

Most importantly, those who claim to be Christian need to turn back to God. It is no wonder that unbelievers are turned off from the gospel message when most of confessing Christendom is just like, if not worse than, the world.

Pastors and churches have been praying for revival for years. Maybe it will happen now.

This is exactly how I viewed the events of last week. God removed His hand and let Satan have his way. And only God can accomplish the difficulty of being judgmental and longsuffering at the same time. He is giving us time, time to think about what has happened and what it REALLY means. My pastor did not see this as a sign of chastisement. I was disappointed by this because it encourages Christians to think that judgment will not come upon this nation, when it HAS TO, God's nature demands that it does if repentence does not occur.

A "greatest American theologian" BUMP.

4. They are now the objects of that very same anger and wrath of God, that is expressed in the torments of hell. And the reason why they do not go down to hell at each moment, is not because God, in whose power they are, is not then very angry with them; as he is with many miserable creatures now tormented in hell, who there feel and bear the fierceness of his wrath. Yea, God is a great deal more angry with great numbers that are now on earth: yea, doubtless, with many that are now in this congregation, who it may be are at ease, than he is with many of those who are now in the flames of hell.

Israel (America?) shall cry unto me, My God, we know thee. Israel (America?) hath cast off the thing that is good: the enemy shall pursue him. (Hosea 8:2,3)

So, do you object to the content of Jonathan Edward's sermon, or just the timing of this post?

If the latter, then you fail to recognize that truth is always in season.

Do you know if any bodies of children have been recovered from the rubble of the WTC?

I object to both. There's a masochism of surreal proportions running through this whole line of "thought."

And it parallels nicely the arguments of the Taliban against America.

Sick and twisted.

Here's one of the milder paragraphs:

So that, thus it is that natural men are held in the hand of God, over the pit of hell; they have deserved the fiery pit, and are already sentenced to it; and God is dreadfully provoked, his anger is as great towards them as to those that are actually suffering the executions of the fierceness of his wrath in hell, and they have done nothing in the least to appease or abate that anger, neither is God in the least bound by any promise to hold them up one moment; the devil is waiting for them, hell is gaping for them, the flames gather and flash about them, and would fain lay hold on them, and swallow them up; the fire pent up in their own hearts is struggling to break out: and they have no interest in any Mediator, there are no means within reach that can be any security to them. In short, they have no refuge, nothing to take hold of, all that preserves them every moment is the mere arbitrary will, and uncovenanted, unobliged forbearance of an incensed God.

This sermon, designed for professing Christians, was the sermon which lit off the Great Awakening.

Every churchgoer in our day ought to read this sermon.

Aside to Uriel1975: I think that this is the kind of thread which professing Christians ought to be reading in our day. Colonial Americans discovered from the Spirit Who attended Edwards's preaching that they were not Christians after all. In our own day, American churchgoers need to wake up to the same awful reality.

Nowadays, people think that sermons like this one are contrary to faith--whereas they are actually the key to faith.

Easy-believism is the wide doorway to destruction. And it is rampant in our day.

My pastor did not see this as a sign of chastisement.

Your pastor knows Jesus, who condemned the Pharisees for the sentiments some are expressing here.

I'm amazed at how much self-satisfaction and smugness there is here about this horrible attack.

It's almost as if you're using this as an excuse to prove how righteous you are.

Aahh, thank you for that inciteful point-by-point rebuttal.

I have seen you cut-and-paste this response a number of times on other threads. Since you obviously do not believe in the Christian God or the Bible, then why do you even bother? Do you enjoy tormenting yourself?

If you would like to lay out the case that says that America is not on the edge of God's judgement then I would love to hear it.

And don't even try to say that I am relieving the terrorists that perpetrated the bombings against our citizens of any responsibility, they are wholly responsible for their acts. Should America call, I will answer and help fight the enemy that is radical, even not-so-radical, Islam.

"Terror is for children"

And for Christians who believe the Bible:

For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ; that every one may receive the things done in his body, according to that he hath done, whether it be good or bad. Knowing therefore the terror of the Lord, we persuade men; but we are made manifest unto God; and I trust also are made manifest in your consciences. (II Corinthians 2:10,11)

I am guessing that your God is not the God of either the Old or New Testaments.

You are absolutely correct. These people are no better than the Islamic extremists who spew the exact same sermons, only in a different language.

The corruption of the heart of man is immoderate and boundless in its fury; and while wicked men live here, it is like fire pent up by God's restraints, whereas if it were let loose, it would set on fire the course of nature; and as the heart is now a sink of sin, so if sin was not restrained, it would immediately turn the soul into a fiery oven, or a furnace of fire and brimstone.

I have often heard this parodied by liberal schoolmistresses, who do not have a clue what Edwards was talking about. But this is a perfect description of the men who brought down the towers. Chillingly, I am reminded of Barbara Tuchman's book, "The Proud Tower," which deals with the pride that brought western Europe to its knees during the war of 1914-1918. But it also reminds me of the smaller demons whose deeds are reported to us every day, and how foolish people who cannot know their hearts apologize for them and make excuses for the inexcusable. Even natural men know that actions have consequences. Are we now entering the twilight? Well, light the lamps and light the candles and pray before going into battle.

I gave it all the consideration this trash merits.

I have seen you cut-and-paste this response a number of times on other threads.

No, I only used this one other time.

Since you obviously do not believe in the Christian God or the Bible, then why do you even bother?

Because I respect real Christians, not masochistic opportunists.

Do you enjoy tormenting yourself?

Self-flagellation and hair shirts seems to be your bag, not mine.

If you would like to lay out the case that says that America is not on the edge of God's judgement then I would love to hear it.

Hello, Osama. Welcome to Free Republic.

And don't even try to say that I am relieving the terrorists that perpetrated the bombings against our citizens of any responsibility, they are wholly responsible for their acts.

Except that God made them do it to punish the "sinners." Riiigghhhttt.

Should America call, I will answer and help fight the enemy that is radical, even not-so-radical, Islam.

Another sunshine patriot, fair-weather soldier. Why not go enlist now? Why not a decade ago?

My God is the God of love and the God of Romans 1:18-32.

If this is not your God, then you are one of the folks whom Edwards was warning. No doubt about it. You are the subject of Romans 1:18-32.

My point, sinkspur, is that we must not abuse the important doctrine of the love of God to stupidly deny the important doctrine of the wrath of God. That is actually an example of the very Truth suppression which infuriates the True and Living God.

Most people think that the gospel is just a matter of denying the wrath of God. But that is actually a counterfeit of the gospel. The True Gospel is more profound, more wonderfully awful than you have realized.

************************************************************************************************

It has occurred to me that men truly do love the darkness more than the light..they love walking around with their eyes closed, that way they are blind to their own sin..they do not have to look at the lives that they believe are "good enough" to get into heaven...they do not see the filthy rags as an all seeing God does...

And so there are objections to the light being turned on..if only for a moment..because the truth blinds their eyes..

4. That the reason why they are not fallen already, and do not fall now, is only that God's appointed time is not come. For it is said, that when that due time, or appointed time comes, their foot shall slide. Then they shall be left to fall, as they are inclined by their own weight. God will not hold them up in these slippery places any longer, but will let them go; and then at that very instant, they shall fall into destruction; as he that stands on such slippery declining ground, on the edge of a pit, he cannot stand alone, when he is let go he immediately falls and is lost.

The light is on the vast expanse beneath is clear...and they still cry out "shut off the light!"

Thanks for the flag Jerry..
