We must learn these lessons well. The mujahedeen is just as eager to die as the Japanese soldier, sailor or airman was in 1941. We must extract a price that they are not willing to pay.

The mujahadeeen might be very willing to die, but the experience in Desert Storm with wholesale surrender of Iraqi soldiers plus the present streaming into Iran of Afghanis after being exhorted to stay and fight by the Taliban shows that the typical "jo6pac_of _goat's _milk" in the Middle East might have some reservations about tripping off to Paradise with the jihadists.

I disagree. Re-read the last paragraph of this article post.

I did, and it states precisely the same point I made. I haven't a clue why you disagree.

The bin Laden/Saddam alliance is based on a shared common enemy--the Royal family in Saudi Arabia and the USA. But that's as far as it goes. In reality, bin Laden hates Saddam, too, because Iraq is not an Islamic fundamentalist state. So, while they can cooperate on some things, bin Laden is no client of Iraq, and bin Laden is ultimately a threat to Hussein. It's clear that bin Laden operates independently, and that's why he could never flourish in Iraq.

Good post. Saddam Hussein needs to be taken out on general principle. No linkage to bin Laden is necessary for me.

You did not provide a source for the "death" of Muhammed bin Laden. Instead you call my source "lies." Truly bad form.

Now, I don't know if what you're saying is true or not, but I found the quote I was looking for from the book (page 14)

In the early 1980s, the Saudi Court decided to expand the two holy mosques. The project would have gone to one of Muhammad bin Laden's companies, but to honor Osama, King Fahd personally offered him the contract for expanding the Prophet's Mosque in Medina. He was told that this deal alone would net him a profit of $90 million. In the audience with King Fahd, Osama bin Laden refused the offer and instead argued passionately for greater commitment to and support for the jihad in Afghanistan. King Fahd, Crown Prince Abdallah, and the Prince Turki, already convinced of the stragetic importance of the situation in Afghanistan for Saudi Arabia, were strongly influenced by bin Laden's conviction and promised to help the Afghan "cause." In the end, Osama did not lose much financially, for the contract when to his father (emphasis mine). Osama later told confidants in Afghannistan that his wealth increased and his business grew with the amount of money he spent on the jihad.

I ask again for your source.

What I was disagreeing with in your post was that you believe the ties with Hussein were "in the past." It doesn't make sense. Their ties began in 1998 -- over two years ago and they have been very active, according to the author, who is an expert and trusted by Congress. The people planning this attack on the US have been working on this for part of that time -- how much will be determined in the near future.

Do you really believe that bin Laden possesses so many assets that he could work intimately with Hussein with his most trusted cadre and at the same time extensively plan this terrorist attack with someone else? By himself? Why would he do that when he has the foremost hater of America and the Bush family in his close confidence? Doesn't make sense.
