ABC News: Anthrax Additive Tied to Saddam

A substance attached to the anthrax in a letter sent to the offices of Senate Majority Leader Tom Daschle indicates that the deadly poison was concocted in Iraqi laboratories, confirming a report by an Iraqi weapons expert cited in a print exclusive by NewsMax.com earlier this week.
"An urgent series of tests conducted on the letter at Ft. Detrick, Md., and elsewhere discovered the anthrax spores were treated with bentonite," ABC News reported late Friday.
"As far as is known, only one country, Iraq, has used bentonite to produce biological weapons," ABC News said.
The unique Iragi biological component helps keep anthrax particles from sticking together, thereby making the substance more easily airborne and all the more deadly. Bentonite is considered by biological weapons experts to be an Iraqi "trademark," ABC News reported.
The discovery of benonite in the Daschle letter anthrax is the first evidentiary link between the wave of anthrax attacks that has hit the U.S. in the last two weeks and Saddam Hussein.
"It means to me that Iraq becomes the prime suspect as the source of anthrax used in these letters," former U.N. weapons inspector Timothy Trevan told ABC News.
Late Monday, the one-time head of Saddam Hussein's nuclear weapons program, Dr. Khidhir Hamza, said that there was no doubt Iraq had produced the anthrax used in the current wave of bioterror attacks on the U.S.
"This is Iraq," Dr.Hamza told CNBC's "Rivera Live." "This is Iraq's work."
"Nobody (else) has the expertise outside the U.S. and outside the major powers who work on germ warfare. Nobody has the expertise and has any motive to attack the U.S. except Saddam to do this. This is Iraq. This is Saddam," Dr. Hamza said.
NewsMax.com was the only print outlet to report Dr. Hamza's coments.

Dany Shoham, a research associate at Tel Aviv University's Begin-Sadat Center of Strategic Studies, said the regime of Iraqi President Saddam Hussein attempted to bring biological weapons agents into Britain and the United States in 1998. The attempt was reported by Israeli intelligence.
At the time, Shoham said, Iraqi women agents arriving in the United States were hiding vials filled with biological agents under their dresses.
Iraq was also attempting to smuggle biological and chemical agents into Britain hidden in duty-free goods.
Shoham, a reserve intelligence officer with close ties to Western intelligence agencies, said the Iraqi effort was foiled by British authorities. He suggested that Iraq succeeded in bringing the anthrax virus into the United States."
Iraq Expecting To Be Attacked By US
Daily Telegraph
October 28, 2001
Iraq's deputy prime minister says "it is just a matter of time" before Britain and the US attack his country.
Tariq Aziz accuses them of trying to remove Saddam Hussein's government under the pretext of a war on terrorism.
Speaking in the Daily Telegraph he also denies any Iraqi involvement in anthrax attacks on the US.
He says Iraq's anthrax supply was destroyed during UN inspections in the 1990s.
Mr Aziz claims he is aware of plans for the West to strike "300 targets with 1,000 missiles".
He commented: "We know they are preparing for such an attack.
"We are watching what is being said and what is being done in the United States and Britain and we know it is just a matter of time before such an attack."
He says it would be a "very grave mistake," and although he does not expect Arab military retaliation to follow an attack on Iraq, he believes the coalition against terrorism will fall apart as a result.
Mr Aziz adds that Iraq's armed forces have recovered from the effects of the 1991 Gulf War and are now "capable and in a position to defend the country".
He also said suggestions of Iraqi involvement in the continuing release of anthrax in the US were "baseless" and "ridiculous."
They do not object, says the Mossad station chief in Amman, "because the nations in the Persian Gulf are American and British allies, and they are profiting greatly from the smuggling operations carried out by Saddam and his family. Even the Kurds, who claim to oppose Saddam in Northern Iraq, have been given a piece of the Asia pie. Asia has an office in Zakho, which is a town controlled by the Kurdish resistance movement, but no one would dare interfere with Saddam's operations there. Everyone, including the Kurds, is getting a piece of the action."

Getting free from Saddam
"One such attempted coup occurred in 1996. The CIA and M15 were about to launch a coup against Saddam. The CIA station chief based in Amman, Jordan, had set everything in place. The Republican Guard members who would stage the coup had been chosen. Some of them even had special cell phones tucked away on their persons that could put them in touch with the CIA people in Jordan.
Yet, somehow Saddam -- who had set up a special unit to identify potential coups -- scuttled the Westerners' plot.
Perhaps as many as 300 Iraqi officers were arrested and tortured. Many were executed. One of the special CIA cell phones was captured. At that point, Saddam had one of his intelligence agents dial "The Company" back in Amman.
"Your men are dead. You can pack up and go home," the Iraqi agent reportedly told the CIA field agents in Jordan.
Republicans in the U.S. Congress passed the Iraq Liberation Act, which authorized almost $100 million in training and equipment for the Iraqi resistance. Congress also authorized just under $10 million for an economic support fund."

"At the same time, WND interviewed scores of ordinary Dutch and Danes who all agreed that there will be "a war within 10 years to drive out the immigrants. It will begin in Russia and spread to Scandinavia."
Said one Danish taxi driver who voiced the typical opinion, "When the blacks and Muslims get enough numbers in Denmark, they will turn on us and try and kill us. But Danes are not stupid. They see the white farmers being killed in Zimbabwe. We know our government won't protect us. But there are guns all around here. You can buy them everywhere and already the average person is preparing for the war to come."
U.S. government sources said an investigation of the anthrax attacks against Congress has pointed to evidence that Iraq could have been responsible. They said that Iraq is the only country that produces agents found on some of the letters."
The Bush administration is "reluctant?"
Be my guest! The sooner the better.
Just for laughs.

Sooner or later the Arab influence in Russia and former USSR sateliites will result in a push agaisnt Israel and a show down with the US.
The start could come with Iraq. Of course Iraq and Iran are both helped heavily by Russia and China. Not a pretty picture.
Thanks Uncle Bill for a lot of great work and terrific information.
This is a fabulous thread on Iraq. Keep it added to, bumped and archived for a long, long time.
