Well this is a national emergency and difficult measures will have to be taken until the crisis lifts.

And when does the crisis lift? How do you fight the enemy when he is amongst us? Do you keep all the airplanes out of the air? Or restrict sea travel? Or put up checkpoints outside cities? Ask citizens for their travel papers? How far is to far and who gets to decide? The president must follow the law, ESPECIALLY in time of crisis. It is what makes us who we are, and if we give that up, then we may as well just hand them the keys to the White House.

Today's attacks once again conveniently saved Clinton.

Ashcroft was ordered to turn over all the evidence on criminal investigations on Clinton today to Congress.

The attacks diverted the American people's attention from it, and subverted Congress from enforcing it.

The WTC was an excellent target because there was a clear flight path into it, there were enormous numbers of occupants in it, it was a landmark, and terrorists could learn from previous attempts how to successfully destroy the buildings. Intentional plane crashes into important buildings (and unintentional ones) are not unprecedented, and hijackings have been almost routine (you can take control of a plane armed with a knife?!!). Newsmen everywhere have been marvelling at how "sophisticated" that this attack was, but when you think more about it, the more stupid it seems and the more uncoordinated our government appears to be. The most amazing thing to me is that apparently not enough people understood that the buildings were in imminent danger of collapse.

I have had the funniest feeling that this was not done by the "usual suspects". The targets seem like the targets the "usual suspects" would target, but why if the actual target of their hatred is Israel, why not unleash this attack on Israel herself, not her "agent". For some reason, the vision of a twisted "The Fight Club" ending scenario comes to mind.

Those are difficult questions. Any answer is bound to anger many people.

BUT--

We cannot close our eyes. We cannot deny reality just because many of us are uncomfortable with it. We cannot refuse to take _some_ action just because _any_ action is bound to piss off someone.

Have you ever been in a street fight? Fights happen. This -- what's happening around us -- is a real life, large scale version of a fight. We -- as a country -- have the same options as a citizen confronted with street violence. We can refuse to admit it and refuse to fight and let the scum beat us up. We can attempt some kind of proportional response and just try to keep ourselves from getting hurt. Or we can strike out with all the force we can muster and put an end to the situation by eliminating our attacker's ability to attack.

Crying and whining about how our response might get us hurt or infringe on our freedoms is, in a very real way, insane. This attack has hurt us. This attack has infringed on our freedoms.
