Fifteen+ years ago we were looking at real estate in FL, planning to move there, and then segue into retirement later.
OMG! The traffic was intolerable! The Bradenton-Satasota area. And we had been living near the 101 and 405 in SoCal for 10 years, so we knew traffic.
We ruled out FL that trip.
My sis and her hubby sold their condo on the Gulf Of America and moved to TN five years ago. Insurance was the impetus for that.

I think you made the right choice. Yes Florida is deep red, but the negatives are not worth it. As strange as it sounds, the redder the state, the more expensive it has become. Definitely not supposed to be that way.

100,000 ended up leaving
That's still a lot of people. The tax base suffers tremendously if all of those people were working and paying taxes. And the damage is much worse if those people owned property and had big salaries and huge bank accounts.
