The airline will not allow you to board without the visa.
UK charging something like $16. for an “ETA” tourist tax (may go up higher soon)(see the bottom of the linked article below)...other countries tourist taxes vary:

It’s the ETIAS which is supposed to be free for people over 70. I didn’t go to Europe this year. I was there in 2024 but don’t remember any of these extra charges.
OK, had a quick look...didn’t see anything about “70 y/o people”...they waive the ETIAS requirement for 70 year-olds or they waive the ETIAS fee for 70 y/o people?? Thanks.

You’re right—they don’t say anything about over-70s being exempt. I read it on my phone a few days ago but can’t find the item now.
