But the Northwest Ordinance of 1787 passed by the Continental Congress banned slavery in Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, Michigan and Wisconsin. So Illinois was always a free territory and a free state.

Well, many here have ancestors who fought on the Union side in that war. How about reparations from blacks to us? Especially from blacks who did nothing with that freedom but become criminals.

I suspect some if not all of the indigenous peoples who lived in what is now Illinois before the French arrived also practiced slavery.

I read once that when Illinois became a state, the vote to maintain the ban on slavery won only by a 4 to 3 margin. Many of the settlers of southern Illinois had come from Southern states which had slavery. But probably few of the settlers of northern Illinois or the Chicago area were from the slave states.

Despite Illinois' status as a free state, farmers in southern Illinois sometimes hired slaves to work on their farms from Kentucky slaveholders.
