I did a little searching on FamilySearch.org

In 1920 his mother Mildred Martinez was 8 years old. Her parents (Joseph and Louise Martinez) and 5 older sisters are all listed as white. Joseph's birthplace is given as "Hati" but "Amer.cit." noted next to it. His parents were both born in Louisiana.

Going back to the 1900 census, the family is in Louisiana. The two parents and their two oldest children (ages 4 and 2) are all listed as Black. His place of birth is "Hayti Am. Cit." and his parents were both born in Louisiana.

FamilySearch has an file on Mildred (GWLH-T3H) with a chart. She was born 30 Dec 1911 in Chicago and died 18 June 1990 in Chicago Heights. The charts shows some of her ancestors as far back as 6 generations--some of the 5th generation ancestors have birth dates in the early 1700s so some of the 6th generation must have been born in the 1600s. Predominantly French surnames.

She had three children: Louis Martin (1952), John Joseph (1954), and Robert Francis (1955). All three are marked as "deceased."

So much for the reliability of genealogical information you find online.

The new pope's grandfather was born in Haiti in Jan. 1864. Could that family have been part of Abraham Lincoln's short-lived experiment with settling black Americans in Haiti? It didn't last long because so many of the colonists died.

Mildred's mother's great-great-grandfather was Jean Baptiste Baquie (1712-1792). His parents, Pierre Baquie and Marie Betbeder, were obviously born in the 1600s.

Mildred's father's side is a mix of Spanish (Martinez, Ramos) and French (Cadeneth, Monteuil, Reaux) surnames. Maybe the Spanish surnames date to the period when Louisiana belonged to Spain after 1763.
