“Puerto Rico is in the peculiar position where all “fossil” fuel to power their electric generation has to be imported, in large volume and on an ongoing basis.”

same as Hawaii, only a much larger population and land area than Hawaii ...

Then when the yearly cat4-5 hurricane passes by, it can spread broken glass and solar cells all over the island...

However, this apparrently didn't stop the biden admin from funding several solar farms for billions of dollar in grants and loans...

Puerto rico got at least $10 billion to rebuild the electrical infrastructure for hurricane marie....

And if you look at fema funding for puerto rico, it still yearly gets several billion for hurricane marie rebuilding, even now

And that doesn't account for money directed to puerto rico from other government agencies

From the musical . West Side Story:

“Puerto Rico,
You lovely island . . .
Island of tropical breezes.
Always the pineapples growing,
Always the coffee blossoms blowing . . .”

I had a great vacation there a long time ago. Also had a very smart friend in LA who was from there. He was one of the first good IT guys, taught my son how to program.

The whole islands grid is only 6091 megawatts of capacity. Forget SMRs ask the Japanese to come in and build a single four pad plant of AWBR reactors at 1350 MW each that covers the whole grid and those reactors can load follow using just their pumps down to 50% and steam bypass in less than 5 min and up at 5% per minute. Japan can build those in 39 months from first shovel to fuel loading. It’s a small grid put in a single quad pad, and use the condenser heat at 40C for rapid spray desal. The USA cannot build nukes for political reasons , the Japanese and Koreans don’t have such sillyness ask them to come do it as Puerto Rico is not the.USA tell the greens to piss up a rope..

Why on earth isn’t their energy nuclear already? Not going nuclear to me is gross incompetence.

Solar farms and grid tied solar = stupid.

Individually owned systems works.

.... instead of allowing said failures to take down the rest of the system like a row of toppling dominoes...
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Perfectly describes the August, 2003 grid failure....
Yup, I seem to recall we dumped billions into Puerto Rico to upgrade their power grid after hurricane Maria in 2017.
Puerto Rico wants to be a state? Looks like they need to work to make it happen & blaming it on our president won’t help them as they are not a state.
