“Because we are $34T in debt?”

Not with Australia.

If you think low taxes on Americans is the problem, you sound a lot like Bernie Sanders. Try cutting spending?

If you want to replace the income tax with tariffs, awesome, but now we have both. But the current tariff policy is poorly thought out, poorly applied, and when punitively put on countries with which we have a trade SURPLUS, it will mean less trade, and less income for American exporters, and less tax revenue, and more debt.

Shhhh. You’re not supposed to ask that question. Shame on you. You are also not supposed to notice that these are only one half the rate being charged on our products. You are also not supposed to notice that many of the targets have already approached the compromise table.

The real tax in these tarriffs is that the cost of goods will go up but the US will get the money instead of someone else. It will take time though. Meanwhile, the shock will wear off and things will creep back to normal.

If the tarriffs against our goods are removed or moderated and the tarriffs on their goods is removed in reciprocity what happens to the prices we pay here?

These are not, as advertised, tarriffs that are protective but instead reciprocal. What we had up until now is not anything like free trade. Instead, it is a dismantling of the U.S. manufacturing base and correspondingly our economic base. Nearly 50 years ago now some of us noted that the basis of our economy will not be preserved by a service based one. That has come true.

Exactly..and the same ones who hate tariffs have NO problem with other countries ripping us off blind. Hey this whole tariff thing could end TODAY if these countries came out and said “We wont tariff you anymore” fine, its a deal, you dont tariff us, we wont tariff you..its really that simple..I remember a time when the left hated globalism, they hated the fact that the world was dominating us taking our jobs from union workers, now they embrace the suck

If you think free trade is a good thing then you may be a Marxist:

"But, in general, the protective system of our day is conservative, while the free trade system is destructive. It breaks up old nationalities and pushes the antagonism of the proletariat and the bourgeoisie to the extreme point. In a word, the free trade system hastens the social revolution. It is in this revolutionary sense alone, gentlemen, that I vote in favor of free trade."

You literally don’t understand Marx is saying. YOU are agreeing with him:

“The protective system of our day is conservative, while the free trade system is destructive.”

You agree with Marx that protectionism is good, you agree with Marx that free trade is destructive.

“It is in this revolutionary sense alone, gentlemen, that I vote in favor of free trade.”

So what he is saying here, is he wants free trade because he believes it will hasten the collapse of capitalism, not that it is beneficial economically.

Understand now that you are sucked into Marxist economics?

Our tariff on Australia is now 10% the same as Australia’s tariff on us.

“Our tariff on Australia is now 10% the same as Australia’s tariff on us.”

There are so many dumb lies in the Trump Presentation that I get why you think that, but it is not true.

10% was the base rate on everyone. Australia got 10% because we have a trade SURPLUS with them. So there is no reciprocal tariff on Australia, they don’t have a 10% tariff rate on US products.

Australia does have a base tariff of 10% so in fairness we can have 10% base also.

You haven’t lost anything until you sell. Stay in, the stock market will come back.

I agree, if we were doing reciprocal tariffs. But the tariffs are based on trade deficit, and it is just a coincidence with Australia that the base rate matches their tariff rate. It is fair, but random.

No they are reciprocal, they are being used to negotiate a much fairer trade. If it was based on deficit Australia would not have a tariff at all

Reciprocal means equal. Trump promised, and said the tariffs would be reciprocal, but we now know that was not true. The tariffs are simply (Deficit/Imports)/2 . For Australia, it would be zero, they get hit with a 10% minimum.

You obviously just want to nitpick words and not understand that they are being enacted to negotiate fair terms for the US. That is your prerogative. Have a great day.
