Yep.
I just read some narratives of sailors on Privateers in the early 1800s. They had cannons.
Sling shots for youngsters. And at about 8 they can get cannons with the rest of us.

That age group has fought in disproportionate numbers in every single conflict we’ve been in. If they aren’t part of the Militia and the people, then no one is.
