The media blank out songs not approved, so they won’t have to pay performance royalties.

Lee Greenwood allows the performance/recording on national media. Clout.

There is the story of “Men at Work” song: “Land Down Under”
in which a copyright holder of an Australian Girl Guides theme song (”The Kookaburra”) claimed enough of a song in the recording as “stolen”. Wound its way through Aussie courts to a 6 figure settlement. For what, from before 1940 was generally thought to be a folk song. An amazing tale.

Writer Colin Hay (the main writer for that group)- still tours, acoustic shows- pretty talented guy.

Sam Moore is still alive and a supporter, I believe. Hire him to do a one song “concert’ at the end of each show.

Wasn’t Chef fired from South Park years ago for being Scientologist Karen?

*Ella Fitzgerald left an 80 million dollar estate— without a will. Amazing.*

Trump should offer the population a one time tax credit for wills and living trusts. Those that don’t take care of their business should have it confiscated by the feds to pay off the deficit only after the government is gutted. It would be a drop in the bucket but 80 million is some real cash. I’m sure the Jesse Jacksons out there have their eyes on the $30 trillion invested in our IRA’s and other retirement accounts. Something tells me this could get done by the time they last baby boomer born turns 80. That would be 2044. aLet the baby boomers fix the problem. They are certainly a spoiled bunch.

the stupid ones-— you have it correct. Remain unknown— leave nothing for an audience who could appreciate your work— but no! The joke way back was and still is for some whiner on stage: “I’ve suffered for my art, and NOW you will Too!” All that you say is true, missing several cogs in their wheels.

“At least Chrissie Hynde let Rush use “My City Was Gone”.”

from what I remember Chrissies father was a huge Rush fan and it made him happy to hear her song, and that made her happy even though she did not care for Rush herself.

and RIP Neil Peart

Performer not writer— but would be a huge kick in the tail on these grifters.

Remember Rush’s help for Clarence Frogman Henry— for his “homeless theme” on his show. Incredible— and very caring person Rush was. Put Clarence back on the map and they became friends.

Yes- fantastic rendition of “Overkill”— with cameo of Hay- who gets his guitar smashed.

This song stuff is tedious.

Songs can be licensed for almost any use through ASCAP and BMI. It’s not cheap. It’s based on the audience and method of “transmission.”

As long as the fees are paid, there is nothing the original artist can do about it. They can obviously complain, but these are the rules they agree to to make money off their work.

The proper answer for someone who doesn’t how their music is used is to state you don’t want it used. And donate the check to a charity. At least that way the artist is not a hypocrite.

That’s possible. It’s why you often don’t hear more than 15-20 seconds of a song. I think the cut off used to be 20 seconds, but its been ages since I delved too deeply into this stuff.

Always liked it when he played The Klaus Nomi version of You Don’t Own Me. Rush was/is the best.
