Now they get to listen to jets take off all day every day.
Okinawa did not bomb Pearl Harbor. The Japanese did. In 1941, Okinawa was independent of Japan. The Japanese simply conquered it like they did everything else at the time.
My best friend's mother is from Okinawa. They hated the Emperor and wanted to be independent of Japan. She even said the languages are different, albeit similar, but Okinawan is not Japanese.
Okinawa is now part of Japan, but it wasn't at the time in question.
If I recall correctly, she said that all the old folks voted *NOT* to become part of Japan, but all the young people, who didn't remember the brutal oppression by the Japanese, voted to be part of Japan.
At least that's what my friend's mom said.
But we're being woke therefore we're stupid.
Absolutely right.
” They shoulda thought of that before they bombed the harbor.
Now they get to listen to jets take off all day every day.”

Thank you for posting what I should have . The Okinawans have been getting screwed by both the American and Japanese governments since before the end of WW2 . Tokyo bows to American wishes . Lackeys if you will . But once , and it will happen eventually , China and Japan forge some stronger ties , then watch out .
I think you’re right, I was just kidding. Yeah, lot of US military there on that small island. After the Military I worked on Torii for a little bit and remember the nearby airbase being the busiest I had ever seen. Couldn’t imagine living near there.
But we can’t move them to Guam or that place would tip over for sure.
I was there in 1968. Taiwan and Thailand in 1969. It was definitely NOT impoverished at that time.
Time to bring the troops home?
That war ended almost 80 years ago.
It has been mixed.
Japanese invaded Okinawa in 1609 as part of an expansion not unlike our expansion West in the late 1800s. Two hundred and seventy years later Oki became a Prefecture and had been fully integrated into Japan. Not sure what vote you are referring to.
Jamel.......says it all.
I spoke with my friend further on the matter as his mom passed away some years ago. The vote was about whether Okinawa would continue being governed by the USA or by Japan.
He said that Japan launched an intensive public relations campaign which included getting native Hawaiians to do commercials describing how everything in Hawaii sucked when America took it over. The older people of Okinawa were in favor of continuing under USA governance, while the younger people, who did not remember the brutality of Japanese control, voted in favor of being governed by Japan.
He says Japan's public relations campaign occurred in the early 1970s.
This is what I found on the matter.
