I always admire that my mom could make one whole chicken feed a family of 8 as long as there were vegetables and a piece of bread for sides. Yes, she grew up in the Depression, too, and her parents were immigrants (legal, of course!).
We were officially poor by the government standards for about 4 years when I was a kid and pre-teen, then borderline throughout my HS years. The good thing is that poverty can often be a strong motivator for people who don’t like being there, and don’t want government help, which my parents never took. Dad worked 4 jobs, one full-time, and 3 part-time jobs to keep food on the table, and to pay the rent. We all learned at an early age how to pitch in however we could.
Just like in the ancient days when they would sacrifice children for wealth (better crops, etc.).
Interesting to note, Signe Anderson died on the same day as Paul Kantner, another founding member of Jefferson Airplane. January 28th, 2016.
And that's a difference. I might've bought a Marshall stack in my late 40s but I was under no illusions that I'd ever be a rockstar, or even a working musician.
I was not about to quit my day job to chase dreams of stardom. It would've been preposterous. As a general rule, if you have not found success in the music business by 27 or so, it's just not going to happen.
The electric guitar remains a beloved hobby. My family's needs and my financial commitment to provide for them will always come first.
I wasn't aware of that, thanks. I watched the Jefferson Airplane in free concerts in the mid-1960s in the GG Panhandle near Haight in SF, and can't recall seeing a female singer. Maybe because I was stoned. Later on I saw them at Fillmore West with Grace Slick as the singer, around 1968 or so.
I enjoyed watching Jefferson Airplane and other bands live in concerts. Like at Fillmore West and Winterland, where bands played songs out with solos up to 20 minutes or more. Check out the guitar intro on White Rabbit at Winterland.

Above is Signe’s last concert in Oct. 15, 1966. Not as good of a recording as yours, but it WAS 9 years previous. She did finish out that tour - with her baby in tow! The song is Chauffeur Blues, “her” signature song. Out of respect, Grace Slick never sang it. So the story goes - maybe Grace hated it!?
When I hit 40 I just took a two week trip and drove to Georgia. I was born there, left at 10 months old, and never been back.
Drove to Atlanta for a few days. Then to Ft. Benning in Columbus where I was born. The Army keeps good records. Showed me the room I was born in.
First day in Atlanta I met a gorgeous women and we spent a week having “fun”.
The Braves were in the World Series and I got to go to a game.
Grace did post this on Twitter when both Kantner and Anderson passed away.
Never realized Signe Anderson was so beautiful. Jefferson Airplane really scored with hot lead singers!
"Remembering Paul and Signe today. ❤️"
It's kinda funny how everyone thinks Keith Richards will be the last rocker standing while Grace Slick continues to outlive him. She'll be 85 this year!
